    I'm at the game :)

Encouraging quotes from Gus about Giacc, think it is just a matter of getting him up to speed

Seems to be more and more sources stating that we are obligated to buy him should we stay up...

I purely thought it was first option!

With him barely being played but Gus saying he's a fantastic talent...it does make you wonder

    The mirror's story:

Black Cats have obligation to buy the Argentina international from Inter Milan if they avoid relegation even though he's managed just 3 starts so far

Claws in his contract: Alvarez is set to join Sunderland for £7.5m at the end of the season
Ricky Alvarez is likely to complete a permanent £7.5 million switch to Sunderland in the summer.

The Argentina international will get a rare chance to impress against Fulham in the FA Cup fourth round replay on Tuesday night.

The winger, who has failed to claim a regular starting place on loan this season, is still “likely” to meet all the conditions which mean the Wearsiders have to buy him from Inter in June.

Sunderland paid a £1m million loan fee and a obligation to buy is in place if Sunderland avoid relegation and other clauses.

Alvarez, 26, has only made three starts and seven sub appearances this season, but club sources say a big money deal will probably happen.

He's incredible! Boss Poyet says Sunderland fans haven't seen the true Alvarez

Boss Gus Poyet said: “Alvarez has been in and out. He’s never really had the chance to have a run of games and really perform. We will refresh a little bit on Tuesday. He can refresh us a bit and give us a little bit of quality.

“He has incredible quality. He should make a difference. We need to make sure he’s an important player for us.

“Ricky needs to play. He will play on Tuesday. That is one change I will tell you. Tuesday is a big opportunity for him and the longer he can play, the better.”
    ---------------------------------------------------

Anyone who thinks that us staying up is the only thing needed to activate the clause is an idiot!! The "other clauses" will no doubt be playing time, probably goals or assists. If he turned up here on loan for a season with a view to a permanent deal and then played half of one game and looked like, to use an analogy "Gearge Weah's Cousin" - yeah of course that's the only clause <doh>

The Alvarez situation doesn't bother me much. Just a couple of weeks ago, Charlie Oatway was saying he's playing some fantastic stuff in training, but is just finding the rough-and-tumble of EPL strange to him. That's no surprise. However, the South American players who can cope here tend to prove of outstanding technical ability. So I'm just happy for Poyet and Vergini (two South Americans who have coped with the physical side in England themselves) to talk Ricky through this. It'll take a bit of time, but if the ability's there, and there are capable, experienced advisers dealing with it, I'll gladly wait for a good player to adapt.

Agree totally. All good in my book - but there will be no way that the signing will be enforced only on us staying up!!

I tend to agree, marcus. My own impression is that if Ricky's adapting to English play well enough by the end of the season, Gus will opt to buy him anyway, regardless of all the conditions. One of the big problems with staying at the bottom end of the PL as long as we have is that good quality players don't always fancy signing for you. They'd rather sign for e.g. Swansea, Newcastle or Stoke, and it makes running Sunderland an uphill struggle. If we have the chance of a good quality player, and if the signs are right, I think Gus will take it.

I'd go out on a limb and say even in the small flashes we've seen, there is more than enough to justify the fee.

I think he'll start to motor now, and we'll see seasons end, yes, we are obligated to offer the fee, but if we didn't want him surely we could just offer him £500 week wages, he'd sharp tell us no!

But they will all have come from the same source, the one that said this after the first window closed. It's old 'news' Likely hood is we've got an option to buy him if we stay up. That actually makes sense.

Technically he wouldn't, as whilst he's on loan we are paying his Inter contract.

We wouldn't be offering him reduced terms as he has no terms with us, if that makes sense?

Unless, of course, we have pre-arranged his long term contract, in which case we are bazookered.

My thoughts exactly mate. The deal is 'stay up obligated to offer Inter fee'

Doesn't mean he has to sign.

Exactly, and the fee will be set, the samesort of deal any premier league club signs up to when they loan an overseas player. Easily manipulated with the contract offer, and easily gazumped if another team matches the fee and offers a better contract. Why can't the press grasp these basics?
