In some respects I don't have too much sympathy for RL. He made an emotional decision instead of a logical one, and allowed himself to be a pawn in somebody elses' scheme. He was never going to be a big hit at LFC for a couple of years and ride off into the retirement-sunset, and now faces seeing out the rest of his days either on their bench or embroiled in somebody else's relegation scrap. He made his bed so to speak, and now he has to lie in it. On the other hand, whilst I wouldn't pay anything like £5m for him, if he came back to us I would welcome him back as much as the next guy. Why would anyone want to go to Villa of all places?

The England international moved to St Mary's on a season-long loan last summer, but the Saints had the option to turn that move into a permanent transfer in the January window.
