Possibly under instruction to play very central and give the opposition the wing but today he was turn over time and again and until Dyer stepped in to left back position was taken apart. Had it been Rangle making the same errors the board would be full of comments about him not being good enough.
Commentary also pointed out that all Southampton's best efforts exploited the weakness on Swansea's left.
And he keeps wanting a move, and he moans to others about his own errors, and he doesn't track back and he's from St Asaph.

Lets not forget we were playing bs top four side today, if it had been Chelsea, United or City we had beaten no one would complain. it was an away win against ca top four side!! It may not Have been our most attractive football , but it was three points at a much needed time and I'm very happy

We beat United at Old Trafford with a well executed game plan and people called it "the perfect away performance". You just came to St Mary's and did exactly the same. Well done and well deserved.

    Williams was a Titan today.

Hi guys, Saints fan here. Good win. You defended great and executed your game plan perfectly. The only complaint I have is that our manager shouldn't have taken Reed off. It left us too vulnerable when we lost possession.

What do you guys think about the Bertrand red? I said it was a disgraceful challenge on our board. My feeling is that he could have toe-poked it past Barrow (to Barrow's right side) if he wanted to. But flew in with excessive force intending to smash Barrow. Let's say that didn't go down well! <laugh>

thanks Tintin, you have more praise for our team than some of our 'supporters' on here. Betrand? looked like a cut and dry red to me, I see Koeman is going to appeal, but I can't see how he possibly could.

On another day Soton could have put three past us, but our defence- Williams inparticular were solid. Would have bitten your arm off for a point before the game, but a win has made my day.

Southampton's style/tactics at home is to overload the flanks and have 2-3 sometimes 4 storming the box. They overload their right, our left, because that's where they're strongest.

I don't recall them 'doing us' down their right at all bob. All I remember is them crossing early and poorly from there on many an occasion, but I don#t recall them reaching the bye-line, I don't think they did anyway.

They did reach the bye-line on their left flank a few times so I have to disagree with you. Can't say I recall Dyer stepping into LB either.

Maybe I'm missing something because so far he's not bleeped my radar Bob but a good few Not606ers think as you do on this so I'll give Taylor a good 'watch' next game.

Above link to BBC report and a video of post game interview with Garry Monk.

    His very first words are:

    "We had a game plan",

Where did you see or hear him say he didn't have a game plan Bob. You've referred to him saying so a couple of times. Point us the right way

    It
It was a brewing , there were a couple of niggles before it and it was Bertrand's chance to show who was who . straight red imo and that's not being biased , you can't commit challenges like that anymore . and thanks for your imo honest opinion .

A win is a win, but that certainly wasn't a good footballing performance. However, it was a great performance in grit, heart and desire.

It's one of those games that, as we won, a lot of players will be let off the hook for quite a lot of sloppy play. Had we lost, some players and Monk would have taken some serious stick for that performance.

However, we won! But if we're going to make these kinds of performances our norm (which we have of late), we're going to lose a lot more than we win. But at the end of the day, we just beat Southampton away which is a cracking result, so I'm going to savour the victory, keeping in mind my criticism of certain individuals for their performances today to see if improvements are made in the next game.

We mustn't perform like this at home against a potential relegation candidate. That, in my eyes, would not be an acceptable way for a European chasing club to approach a match against a team down the bottom part of the table. I'll withhold criticism until I see how we play next week.

    Chuffed with the 3 points.

If there was a game plan devised for this game I didn't see any evidence of it.
We played exactly the same formation as we always do...if anything, Siggy instead of Shelvey would have been more defensive as Siggy actually makes an effort to track back and win the ball.

I reckon it was just a case of our out of form, weakened, team giving the ball away too much and getting overrun in midfield against a good side who tend not to give it back to you until they've got a shot or a cross in.

I thought we were mullahed 1st half and were just very lucky that Saints couldn't pick out the right pass when it mattered.

In the 2nd half I felt we found our bollocks and seemed to have a greater appetite to compete for the ball....so I'll credit Monk for that.
Shelvey in particular grew into the 2nd half. He seemed to believe that he was going to be the one to make something happen and grew more determined...perhaps AM is his best position and perhaps he could excel there with a more solid platform behind him. I believe Siggy is better though. Fabulous strike from him, as Project says it's the consistency that is his Achilles though.

Weird performance from us....I don't believe the team played well at all but some excellent individual performances....Ash, Fernandez and Fabianski were my 3 picks...and 3 unexpected points has cheered me up.

Naughton was decent going forward I thought, but I am less convinced of him defensively...I felt he got the wrong side of his man a couple of times and was lucky some of the Saints' crossing was so poor.
Taylor didn't play well at all for me.
Fulton was lost out there for me (not writing the youngster off, just felt it was a deep end game and he was out of his depth).
Carroll wasn't as accurate with his passing as usual (that was my impression anyway).
Dyer was absolutely ****ing awful....not even going to get started....but he did work hard defensively in the second half.

Gomis was quite decent for me (given the circumstances of the game).

Hopefully we'll have Ki, Leon, Cork, Siggy, Montero and Routledge back in mid Feb and we should see more quality on the ball, more movement off it and some quick 1/2 touch passing. We should be safe early March (miraculously, as we haven't played like a team who gets to 40 with 2 months to spare!) and, with the pressure off, we can concentrate on gelling this new team.

Next season I want to see style.

Unlike here then. He has been singled out for special treatment for some time now.

To be fair he's not scored the goals that he's been paid a lot of money for.

    Agree about today though.

He played well today , worked hard defensively and in attack , now if that's what he can bring to the game then good keep it up , unless it was his last throw of the dice to get noticed for the right reasons

Just watched it on MOTD it was a clear red and a very cynical foul as he was watching Barrow not the ball and actually delayed his challenge to make sure he got him!
