Tony Fernandes welcomes Sir Ed Lister's Old Oak regeneration comments ...

QPR CHAIRMAN Tony Fernandes has welcomed the comments by Sir Edward Lister that Old Oak regeneration should be stadium-led – ‘we would like to see one (a stadium)’ – in a significant boost to the club’s hopes of building a new stadium near Loftus Road.

Old Oak Common has been identified as an area where the club’s new home can be housed, and Fernandes confirmed work continues on what would be a multi-billion pound regeneration project, which will deliver much more than just a stadium, also providing thousands of homes, creating tens of thousands of jobs and providing community facilities.

Today the club launch a new film that shows how new stadia such as the Olympic Park and the Emirates Stadium can deliver regeneration – and why the same can happen at Old Oak if QPR move there.

“This is another important boost to our plans, and to the overall plan of regenerating Old Oak – London’s forgotten quarter,” Fernandes told www.qpr.co.uk.

“I spent last Tuesday at various meetings and I’m more optimistic that things are falling into place.”

The club plans to transform a large area of under-used land at Old Oak into a thriving and sustainable new quarter for London – with a new stadium acting as the catalyst for new homes, businesses, schools, health facilities and jobs for local people.

QPR are working with the three local Boroughs, the Greater London Authority and local groups to ensure that community benefits are at the heart of the club’s scheme.

“We have worked hard and things are moving in the right direction,” Fernandes added.

“What I can say to our fans is that it’s a daily project with daily effort.

“We have a separate team led by Mark Donnelly (QPR’s COO) and Antony Spencer (Stadium Capital Developments), and we have the support of key decision makers, who we will continue to work closely with to make it happen.

“There is a compelling argument for how a new stadium will transform the area.

“I am confident we will find a way to work with the major landowners there, so I remain optimistic that we will find a way to deliver this dream.”

I think this is one bit of good news which wont be too far away, now Boris is in complete control. We have the backing of GLA and all 3 borough councils, we've been working on it for 2 years and are ready to go as soon as we get approval. Cargiant so far have just been blustering and I doubt Boris wants a second hand car dealership in control of it. He certainly wont want to wait for them to play catch up.

If anyone saw the way Boris had a little love in with Tony Fernandes's mate the other week at the launch of the Battersea Power station rebuild, it gave him a real hard-on to be showing a huge business deal with a foreign investor.

I know there are many things that could go wrong still, I just have a feeling this has very fast wheels on now and I'd expect approval some time in the next 6 months.

Wow, some very much needed rare good news about our club (I hope). Cheers Norway, we could all do with a lift right now.

That red circle in the 1st pic, does our new stadium need to be that big? I think we may struggle to fill 500k seats every home game?......

Cloak room here I go again...

Oh ye of little faith. :emoticon-0105-wink:

Very encouraging to hear some more news, and all sounds positive. A stones throw from Loftus Road, good for transport, and helps the community. If this goes ahead, it could be the platform for exciting times ahead. Maybe overly positive, but a good first step.

OK here is a geeky aspect of the plans that would be of benefit to us. This new stadium will be designed to keep the noise of matches and music concerts in the ground and away from the residents. You can just imagine the noise the supporters will make on a match day being the stadium will also have some acoustic expertise in it's design.

If this is the case then I would like to think that electric feeling you get when the Loft is rocking would be even better?

We did hire a team to look at it a few years ago, Ellerslie could be increased by about 3k and that was it. We just couldn't increase the number sufficiently to make it viable. That is unless we purchased all the properties around us, which would work out a lot cheaper than Old Oak, but then the end game isn't just the stadium. The whole shabang is the main prize, always has been as there are billions to be made in building Old Oak, even though it's a 1.5 billion buy in to even be considered for the tender.

I know some of our fans will probably get all prissy that QPR aren't at the forefront of Old Oak for the owners, but it does show you why they aren't too worried about the money they are putting in to the club, because they'll get it back in spades if they win the right to develop Old Oak. And that doesn't mean that they don't love Rangers, I think you can see just how passionate they are about the club. So we are in a great position in terms of our future, lets just hope things settle on the pitch.

At last, something positive about our club, only hope that this isn't more pie-in-the-sky dreams from TF and there is some solid foundation to what was said.

We still need to get things right on the pitch, as this is not a stadium for a Championship club

The signs are looking positive. This is probably the biggest decision affecting our club in a generation.

All we need now is that plonker Harry to somehow turn things around!

Sounds promisingly but that is all. It would actually be nice to hear or read that new stadium is for sure or even that training center at Harlington.......

Good analysis but if they really loved the club they'd get rid of the **** manager and give a new bloke some transfer money. Too late now though.

Sticking by the manager you've chosen isn't a sign of not loving the club. I just think the penny has dropped for Fernandes and he's realised we have to steady that boat. Sacking the manager isn't going to sort anything. We may survive, just like we did under Hughes, but then the new manager will want his staff, his players and before you know it we've got fans screaming for his head, de ja vu.

How do you know that will happen? I hear you cry. I don't. Just as you don't know if we'll survive this season under Harry.

But at some point we have to address the biggest problem at the club and that is the lack of soul in our team. That comes directly from the managerial merry-go-round with perpetual motion, that has to stop before we can move forward, even if that means dropping down again.

Sounds very promising although I must confess I had to look up Sir Edward Lister (thinking that he was the inventor of antiseptic mouthwash).

Continuity and stability is only a valid argument if you expect Redknapp to be around for some time yet (ie a hefty extension in the Summer). Otherwise the new manager and backroom staff are inevitable in the near future.

Well hopefully he'll shut some people up and we stay up, which is what we should all really want cause it's what's best for the club. But too many are hell bent on wanting him gone. Feels just like when it was 50/50 on who wanted Warnock gone, look what happened then.
