Millwall do have a reputation in the rest of Europe. I remember once getting a taxi in Rome, when the driver informed me that he loved flying over to London on weekends to fight alongside Millwall supporters, adding – “They are top boys”. The fact that Soini seems to share a taste for the top boys of the English lower divisions is not a promising sign.

and like you always say millwallsteve when in Rome <laugh>

'Soini is an interesting character. Doing some reading about him, I discovered two disturbing facts. First, he is a Millwall supporter. This is slightly weird. Millwall are an obscure east London side, plying their trade in the lower leagues. They have a reputation chiefly for having violent fans, sometimes associated with the far-right. The only time I regularly encounter Millwall fans are at England games. My policy is generally that if I find myself standing next to someone with a Millwall tattoo, I move fast.'

The World is Gideon Rachman’s foreign affairs blog. He is joined on it by some of his FT colleagues. Gideon Rachman became the FT's chief foreign affairs commentator in 2006, after a 15-year career at The Economist which included stints as a correspondent in Brussels, Bangkok and Washington. He writes a weekly column on foreign affairs, which appears on Tuesdays.
