Palace away in the play off semi final first leg anyone? Great goals and nerves (slightly) calmed for the return leg. BTW, great idea for the return leg to confine the Palace fans to the lower Rous and make sure that Watford had support on all four sides. The puch-up between Aidy and One Size just added to the occasion.
that leicester game had all the highs and lows then highs again. i had to work that night and i fell asleep at work drivivng as i was totally drained ( no one got hurt ) i got a life time ban driving a fork lift lol
I was behind the goal that glorious evening where Luther scored twice. Gordon McQueen later described Luther as the best header of a ball in English football - slightly over the top and probably defensive as, I believe, McQueen himself was supposed to be marking him - and he certainly bulleted both in. Looking back it was the match my friends and I firmly started to believe that something magical was happening at Watford under GT and SEJ.
i agree there are so many games that we are the up and coming team and there was belief that we could do it ever at old traford . the 1970 cup game v liverpool they was almost all house hold names and some of them still are and not one of our players would have got in there rev team . that game was a full house and i doubt there was many thinking it was possible
please log in to view this image http://www.londonhearts.com/images/pr1986-87/pages/1987051201 Watford 3-4 A.htm Remember Steve Sherwood's testimonial? The Hearts fans were determined to have fun and we all did Mexican waves etc.....
The full house was 34,047! Kinda puts Saturdays 17k attendance into perspective. Damn sight more comfortable now though and more atmosphere - Vicarage Road must be one of the few grounds where all-seater stands have improved the noise!
They did a conga around the ground if I recall, the police turned them back initially but I'm seem to remember a few Hornets jumping the wall and joining in???? That was a great night and cemented them as 'my' Scottish team.
Watford - Leicester City 3:3 when Heiưar came home and scored two goals before being injured. Was sad they didn't win.
Yes that was it... a conga.... was a great night..... and yes I always followed their results from thenon
Memorable for other reasons: Away to Gillingham...brilliant pub lunch, drive through scruffy suburbs, search for the ground, enquiry of a local to be told "Game's off, mate." Away, I think Oxford United, and Richard Johnson lining up a shot from 35 yards, my brother-in-law yelling "He'll never score from there" just as the ball nearly bust the back of the net. Away to either Wolves or West Brom and a pub lunch in a boozer designed as a crooked trompe-l'oeuil interior. You felt pissed before you'd even had a mouthful. Home to a game rained off as we were walking to the ground, Burnley maybe, and said brother-in-law, wearing cream trousers, taking a short cut downhill towards the canal and falling on his backside. Priceless moment!
The Burnley game was definitely called off - that downpour was of biblical proportions and we got absolutely drenched walking from what was the Westminster to the ground. The stands were singing "play the game" but everytime the ref tried to drop the ball a huge puddle splashed back up at him
For sheer disbelief I don't think anything could match the Southampton game. For exhilaration it would have to be the win at Old Trafford in the League cup. Bricks were thrown at the train That was in taking me home. Other very memorable games have all been mentioned. Then there are the personal games, or non-games. A Norwich game was called off because of snow, one year. A group of us thought it would be a good idea to walk home through Cassiobury park. All but one of us thought it was very funny when the non-laugher disappeared into a snow drift that was covering one of the bunkers in the golf course. The 5-0 win at Lincoln was also a good evening game. I lived in the West Midlands and hitched. I ended up sleeping in a workman's hut on the way home because I couldn't get a lift. That game was also memorable for the worst cup of tea I have bought anywhere in the world. WFC have given me so many fabulous times. There have also been some dismal ones but I don't remember them so clearly!
The 4-3 FA Cup tie against L*t*n was on my 11th birthday. Staying away from the first team, the second leg when we won the FA Youth Cup against ManUre was special. Surprised no-one has mentioned the game v QPR when Doyley scored!
yes but we was of an age that we though anything was possible most of that team had played in Europe after we beat them i think they started to rebuild
Dan, I remember going to Fulham on NYD in the Prem. The previous game had been the abandoned game against Wigan, so when it started to rain, we started to chant "this is unplayable" - I wonder what the Fulham fans who didn't know what we were referring to thought.
I've been to most not all of the games mentioned, I've been to more games in the early years that we lost more than won. But every Saturday I was excited (still am) looking forward to this weeks game. Every game has been special and maybe the next one will be the best ever. But I do love reading all of these reports of memories that I thought I lived alone but was shared with friends I never knew I had. All I can say is thanks for the memories and Come on you ' orns
once you have watford in your blood its there till you die .we may not be able to go to as many games as we would like . but we are there kicking every ball running our hearts out in spirit COYH
Perhaps the first league game at White Hart Lane when we beat Spurs 0-1 with Les Taylor's goal and lots of disrespectful tackling. Or the 0-3 win at Arsenal.
