Point is he didn't get that amount of money to rebuild. I think that if most managers had spent 150m then they would be expected to challenge for the tile. Not just a top four finish.
That title winning squad was useless to anyone else other than SAF to be fair as well. Because in truth they were pretty gash.....most of the important players were past it. RVP was injured, Rio, Evra, Vidic, your entire midfield were past it or gash. Only really Rooney and 1 or 2 others who were worth a damn.
No mate the point is, that whether you inherit a title winning side or £150m, there's no guarantee what to expect because everything is relative. You and Bodanki seem to see only one part of the equation, the one that suits your argument whereas the reality is a bit more than that.
Yeah but you know as well as I do that clubs don't usually spend 150m to finish 4th. If he has and United are happy with that, then he is in a pretty unique position.
No he got 70million and more was available. He also had the club captain, team captain and vice captains of tye past 8 years available to help him through tge transition. He decided he didnt need them or their experience and leadership (right or wrong). Van gaal joined a team whos confidence was rock bottom, lacked leadership and had been gutted defensively. Its much hard to build up something than it is to break it down. Thats the ultimate difference between the two.
And Moyes took over straight after Fergie. A huge act to follow. Van Gaal still took over roughly the same squad and spent 150m to hopefully finish 4th. What's so difficult to understand here?
Moyes also had the champions league to deal with. Van Gaal has no mid week games and still churns out utter dross. Maybe it's counter productive. Gives him too much time to think. Why the **** else would anyone play Di Maria as a striker, Rooney at cm, 3 at the back and Fellaini instead of Herrera. Utterly baffling.
Who says we spent £150m to finish 4th? No we definitely spent it to win the title. We'll see progression if we finish 4th this season but you seem to think the world will end in May lol. Either that or you fail to understand that players play for a club for more than one season. When Ranieri spent £120m 11 years ago, were you expecting to win the league that season??? And you were already in the top 4. Ofcourse not, it's not as simple as that is it. But you did the next season, with many of those purchases and further additions.
I wouldn't happy if LVG is just happy to finish fourth. If United do finish fourth , most will see it as a progression to the ultimate objective I.e the title. It was always unrealistic to expect a team finishing 7th to win the title even with £150m spent. But if we finish fourth next season (if we do finish 4th this) LVG will be sacked. Unlike the RS who had coming second as their peak ( Brenda admitting that the title was never on, writing a book to celebrate coming second) we will never be happy with 4th or CL. The club will never accept a CL place as the ambition like the RS or arsenal.
Fail to understand that players play for clubs for more than one season? Don't think so. When Ranieri spent 120m he didn't have a team that won the title a year earlier. My point is that your team wasn't too bad and 150m should have been enough for a title challenge.
If we get top 4 this season, then next season have a good run in the CL and domestic cups and challenge for the title while demonstrating a coherent tactical approach to footbal that matches the club's traditions, then I'll be pretty satisfied. If that happens we're heading in the right direction and will be winning trophies I'm sure. Chelsea and City arent going away and whoever misses out this season will be spending again for next season so it's all relative. As for LVG I'm sure he will come good in the end, he's a proven winner and dont let the baiting fool anyone, I genuinely believe he worries our rivals. But at the moment he's making his job harder than it needs to be and needs to stop ****ing around with team selection and tactics now the players are all fit. If he's worried about the defence then go buy someone and get on with it quite frankly.
Now you're just making it up as you go along. You had a team that was already in the top 4. While ours has just finished 7th. Your £120m back then would be equivalent to double that now. But somehow your own rules don't apply to you?
Double? Keep telling yourself that mate. Fact is that any other manager would be under fire if he had spent 150m to finish 4th.
This is nonsense and you know it. The starting point is key. If LVG was given £150m to take over the champions, he would be sacked without hesitation if he came fourth. But the club was sliding after an awful drop in confidence and from a relatively low- 7th - place. £150m even £250m would not immediately provide a challenge for the title. If he did come 4th next season, he definitely will be under pressure.
So how many of the squad you have now won the league? I know you lost Vidic and Camel lips. That was a big loss. Apart from that the squad was pretty much the same. So a couple of top CB's and couple of decent midfielders and you should be challenging. You may or may not get 4th this year. He spent the money on players you didn't really need.
I could name 4 managers (3 from Man City and Ranieri). You continue to ignore we finished 7th. What you've just said about wasting money on the wrong positions is wrong also. We needed a new LB and the biggest reason we were punching above our weight i Fergie's last season was bcos of our deteriorating midfield. We lacked creativity and a bit of steel in midfield. Buying Herrera, ADM and Blind as well as Shaw were perfectly acceptable. As I've said already, we havent spent £150m to finish 4th. It's not about immediate success but the point seems to be being missed so lets just agree to disagree
The only relevant comparison with last season is where we finish at the end of it. If we get top four and win the FA cup, which he should now target 100% given what happened yesterday, then we've had a good season. Right now we're all over the place though so it's not certain we will. I just can't see what he's trying to do at the moment, and that is why most people are not giving him stick because "he has a plan". Right now his plan appears to be to stick stubbornly to three at the back, play ponderous dull football and play players out of position. Great plan. At the moment it's only my gut feeling that isn't making me want to get shut of him. I do get the feeling that eventually we'll click for some reason and him playing Di Maria as striker and Rooney at CM while keeping actually CM's and strikers out of the side is some bizarre piss take.
Maybe we need to be reminded how many times Chelsea have won the Premier League in the last 10 years and how much has been spent in that time???
