I remember growing up as a kid that there were basically 3 shirts worn - City, Rover & England. Every now and then someone would get a Liverpool shirt but it was rare. How times have changed.

Kids want to be associated with the teams they see on TV all the time and the rise of the Premier League means this will likely never change. It's just "cooler" to follow the big boys than your local team, especially when the team, be it City or Rovers, have been basically crap for a number of years.

As Red Robin points out, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL TEAM before it's too late.

    Bloody Premier League.....

I think one of the problems is the cost of taking a family to a football game. Its so much cheaper to watch the big boys on telly then take a family of four or five to a live match!

Only one other person in my sixth form regularly watches a local side
A few more watch the big games.
But a majority of other people like big named sides like Chelsea and Manchester United and it is a joke.

And all these cocky glory supporting liking spam my facebook with all their fake fan ****!

They're not supporters, they're glory hunting armchair fans who have never been nor will ever go to a football ground in their lives.

I forgot that they don't support a team, just fans if that!

I cannot leave this error unchanged! Editing it straight away!

I said before on the old 606: I have more respect for a gashead or a Swindon fan supporting their local side than I do the premiership "fans" who turn up at the local sorts bar (the Merlin) and cheer on "their " team

As a kid, and aside from always supporting City my school friends and I either supported Chelsea or Leeds....but it was 1970 and the epic FA Cup Final and the replay at Old Trafford that my other team (Chelsea) won.

I soon grew out of it... <laugh>

Always been a fan of Man.U. since the munich air crash, had an effect on me as a 10 year old, however only a fan. Bristol City (other than the wife) are the love of my life...only thing that will stop me supporting the Robins is when I'am pushing up daises!

    'replay at Old Trafford'
Was that the game where Harris came in from the right and took Besty.
Best's knee went in sideways but unbelievably he went on and I think score.

Best was brilliant but naturally and incredibly strong with it.
Harris would have snapped Beckham in half.

What am I like, I must be losing it - forgot about our Korey the other day.
Now I'm mentioning Best and Beckham in the same breath.

    Cheers BJA.
I couldn't get my head around some of the comments that followed.
Some on here actually believed I'd leave Korey out.

I left Wagstaff out as well - they didn't have a go about that <laugh>
