Hull City boss Steve Bruce is not ruling out handing Maynor Figueroa a contract extension beyond this summer if the veteran defender can finish the season strongly.

Figueroa is one of several first-team players facing uncertain futures at the KC Stadium and a severe fall from grace during 2014 appeared to point towards a separation when his current deal expires in June.

However, the 31-year-old has enjoyed a revival of sorts since returning from a loan spell in the Championship with former club Wigan and is making the most of opportunities that have come with City's injury crisis.

After the FA Cup defeat at Arsenal brought Figueroa his first City start in four months, he returned to the Premier League stage for the loss at West Brom.

A switch to 3-5-2 cost Figueroa a third consecutive start in the 3-0 loss at West Ham United but he was soon called upon again by Bruce when emerging off the bench as a first-half substitute.

The Honduran's return from the wilderness has pleased Bruce and, in turn, the City boss has offered hope for Figueroa to win a new deal.

"He's done terrifically well and reminded us what a good player he is, which is great for him," said Bruce.

"That's just the response you want. He had an awful time this time last year when he lost form but his response is typical of what Maynor is.

"The way he's played in the last couple of games, where do you get someone like him on a free transfer?

"He's right in my thoughts (for a contract extension) so we'll just wait and see."

No decision will be made on the future of Figueroa until the summer when City's survival fate has become known.

Signed on a free transfer in June 2013, the left-sided defender is currently on lucrative terms and Bruce must weigh up whether better value could be sought elsewhere.

A sustained return to his previous best would make the decision a difficult one.

Figueroa featured in 32 of City's 38 Premier League games last season but a dip in form, one Bruce traces back to a 4-1 loss at home to Newcastle last March, slowly pushed the defender out of the frame.

"He's a resilient so and so and he's reminded us of why he's played in the Premier League for all these years," he added.

"If you remember when we played Newcastle last year he gave a couple of goals away and that affected him.

"He's come back in and done really well. The two games he's played, he's hardly put a foot wrong."

No decision will be made until the end of the season, if we stay up he'll leave, if you we go down he'll get an extension.

Good decision by Bruce, he's a solid championship player and would be worth retaining if we went down.

There's nothing like the prospect of a new contract to sharpen the mind and body.

To be honest, I'll be astounded if he gets another deal, whatever league we're in.

I think this is nothing more than giving him a little encouragement to perform between now and the end of the season.

I think he could do a job for us the Championship though, although his age/wages might count against him.

Or Brucie wants to use him as a makeweight in a deal for Mcmanaman and is trying to big up his value to us!

I think he can do a job for us in the Premier League.

You don't become a bad player overnight, from what I know he had a lot of personal issues going on last year when he missed a couple of games and then came back and his form dipped. He played well against Arsenal and was Man of the match against West Brom.

I'd say if he continues as he has done since coming back from his loan he deserves a contract, lets face it left back isn't a position we have huge options for, the youth of Robbo and experience of Figgy, two solid left backs there. It's one of the last positions on the pitch we need to be shortening on, surely letting someone like Macca go would be much more sensible, we have plenty of centre halves.

He's not been bad since he came back, and as others have said he'll do a good job in the Champo, there'd be little chance of us keeping Robertson if we went down so it'd fill the lb position sufficiently enough

Don't forget about Townsend, he will no doubt step up next season. I can't see us offering Fig another contract if we stay up or go down, unless if we get relegated and Robertson leaves for a bigger club? TWT.

(Assuming we stay up) Robbo has been found a bit suspect defensively and injury prone too, to have him and a young lad like Townsend who is on loan in the Scottish Premier League as your two left backs would be crazy if you ask me.

Yet having Fig there isn't? We all know he is ****, he just hasn't done anything wrong since he has come back in, it will soon happen.

Since he has been at Hull City he always has a mistake in him and always loses concentration when defending. His 5 years at Wigan are irrelevant, if he was that good then why did they not even offer him a new contract? I know they were relegated, however I'm sure at the time the Wigan fans were happy he left, can't of been that good.

If he wasn't that good I doubt he would of played over 150 games for them, to suggest we should bring in Townsend as our covering left back in the Premier League is pretty ridiculous. Let's face it he'd be on the pitch for half the season with Robertsons injury problems.

He was, but he was apparently ill/injured and wasn't supposed to be playing at all.

He's been all right since he got back, but he's the weakest player in our squad and for that reason, I'd definitely release him.

Any player who makes a mistake should never play for this club again. Ever. They're professional for christ sake.

He is exactly the sort of player we will need to keep if we go down and he is good enough at the top-level, like somebody pointed out he had personal issues which can effect anybody no matter what job you are doing, exactly right that you don't judge a player on a one season slump

Have you seen Townsend play? You can't of done, he does look a good talent. Reminds me of Dawson but with a bit of pace and not as small.

He has filled Robertson's boots enough for Dundee to want to sign him permanently, so he can't be that far behind him surely?
