I was there that night. Most awful thing I have ever seen on a pitch. Whole ground went quiet. Stan was right Martyn was right on top of his game then and he could do the lot , pass, tackle, shoot and had great vision. He went off to Notts County and then came back but was never the same. Cruel game for some is football
The worse thing about it was that the ref didn't even stop the game, the Fulham keeper was over with Martyn trying to comfort him and the game went on...
Someone mentioned Ian Dawes earlier, his partner on the right side was Warren Neil, they made a decent full back pairing.....
I do not think a foul was given. He went into a tackle with Paul Went on or about the half way line. All the crowd could see him lying there with his leg hanging in the air and were shouting at the referee who was trying to keep up with play- truly horrific - could not get it out of my head for weeks. Thinking about it now it was a miracle that Martyn ever played again. Anyhow all history now but it is good to remember how brightly he shone for a short while. He as in Jago's team and I am fairly sure ( need to check old programmes) that just before the Fulham game he had scored a stunning volley in a home game ( May have been Cardiff?)
Don't think it was Cardiff, if that was 72-3. That was my first game and Stan and Don Givens scored the goals. We thumped a lot of teams at home that year. Another player from that era who never fulfilled his early potential was Ian Evans, who was shaping up to be a real, cultured CB, followed Venables to Palace and never seemed to kick on, especially after he broke his leg too. A player that always mystified me was 'Henry' Mancini. A lot of laughs but not very good, and somehow we manage to sell him to Arsenal.
It's a great list but when I think of QPR greats I always think of Ian Gillard and Dave Clement but particularly Ian Gillard. The best full backs a team could wish for.
Mancini? Saw him play a few times at LT , right donkey. Frank Saul was another, what were they thinking. Best players: Parkes, Clement, Gerry Francis, Parker, Bowles, Marsh, Taraabt, Adel, Richard Morgan, Hazell and Adel Taraabt.
I can do an 11. Can't leave anyone out! The 11: Parkes, Clement, McClintock, Webbie, Gillard, Leach, Masson, Francis, G., Bowles, Givens, Thomas. On my bench I'd have Seaman, Parker, Roader, Adel, Marsh, Allen C., and Ferdinand L. Squad, Sinton, Derry, McDonald, Fenwick, Curry, Wood, and Austin.
I know I'm a bit younger than some on here but somebody (Beth, Col, SB, DT)please explain why the following aren't recognised; Seaman Beardsley Sinton Bannister
Roger! Was distracted last night by the sight of Tony Fernandes grovelling to the royal nonce on the TV news. WTF was he thinking.
Yeah. We got him from Leyton Orient and when we got promoted to Div 1 in 73-74 everyone said he would not be able to cope; but he did have decent season and played above himself. The next season things did not go so well for rangers or terry. He had a bit of run-in with the chairman I think and at the end of a match at Loftus Road which rangers narrowly won he dropped his shorts and mooned to the directors box. Terry thought this hilarious but unfortunately for him Jim Gregory did not and had him shipped out pronto.
Beardsley probably because he played for Newcastle and Liverpool. I think you mean Bardsley mate. All good players, Bards in particular a proper QPR player. Bannister has had the same haircut for 30 years (he was paraded on the pitch at the Utd game) so he is in the prat category. And you are not that young you cheeky monkey. See you at the Saints match.
