Not sure how I feel about £9m.... I'd say in today's market £12m+ is the starting point.

    http://www.footballfancast.com/foot...ble-9m-bid-to-sign-newcastle-united-anchorman

Arsenal are in advanced negotiations over a possible move to sign Cheick Tiote from Newcastle United with a bid of around £9million, Daily Star reports.
The 28-year-old is the type of playing Arsene Wenger is looking for and his ability to play as a holding midfield in front of his back four has caught the attention of the Gunners boss.

Tiote’s representatives are believed to have already held talks with the club over a potential switch, with the Ivory Coast international keen on a three and a half year deal worth £80,000-a-week.
He is currently playing for his national squad at the African Cup of Nations and has made 11 appearances this season for the Magpies, who are sitting 11th in the Premier League table.
Wenger is also linked with a move for another Newcastle star, Moussa Sissoko, who is currently priced around the £16million region, a price that could affect his ability to divert extra funds into signing another defender.

This has been rumbling on for some time now without any move by Arse, however you could just see a sudden move at the end of the window with the loss of some key players and the response of it all happened so late and with the window closing there was no chance to replace these players.....................deja vu anyone.

Agree. try for 10+ but take 9m if push comes to shove. Do it now and give yourself a week to get someone else in - better than the last 24 hours.

I don't know so much about "deja vu" but I do have a feeling of having been in the exact same situation before,

Tiote can **** off with my compliments. If Arsenal are stupid enough to pay 9 million they are welcome to him as he is a complete and utter liability. If he is the only one to leave in January I will be relatively content but we all know it won't be and with no other ****er coming in that poses alot of problems.

I'd probably insist on borrowing one of their younger CB's too.

I'd want a bit more for Tiote but rather see him go than Moussa...

    He's ****e, and utterly overrated.

The only impact this will have on anything Newcastle is that MrTiote may have to consider a name change. <ok>

His first season or two with us he looked very good and could have pushed on to be something special but he really hasn't. He has great matches (away to Hull last year he bossed the game) and when he does look good he can be top top draw. But you can say that about lots of average Premiership players, for us he's good without being great. Chuck Abeid in and I'm not too concerned about the team (the cover becomes even weaker of course...).

Is £9m a good fee? Well any less and I'd be unhappy (£5-6m would hurt) but I don't think he's worth £11+ either as he's 28 and inconsistent. He's got 4 or 5 decent seasons in him after this one and if I thought we'd reinvest I'd go for it.

We wont though and although it doesn't affect the strength of the first team hugely it does mean we'll have fewer decent players overall and we'll get to the point that we're removing limbs from the skeleton of playing staff we have.

I think that is a touch over the top. I don't think he is a top 4 type player, but he would get into a lot of PL teams in the holding role. He is not ****e.

The issue we have with him as far as I can see is our strengths in terms of personnel and how we need to play, are not what suits him. He is suited to a midfield where he is at the base as a sole destroyer (sole not soul). If he then has a playmaker (a la Cabaye) in front of him or at the tip of a diamond, he can do all the donkey work and then find that player to make the team tick.

We don't play like that now. We have a roaming playmaker (Sissoko) in front of two deep lying holders. The destruction is a lot more subtle and the duty split. However one the main attributes of both must be an ability to retain possession. That is the only way it works to allow the roaming playmaker to find the space. Hence Abeid and Colback looked so good together. Both will get stuck in but not as aggressively as Tiote. Both are physically strong enough for the league, and most importantly, both are fantastic in possession and their ability to find their target with their passing. Tiote falls down here, he needs someone to come and take that responsibility from him.

We could do with moving him on. Surely Anita and Bigi or Kemen is enough? What we really need is a roaming playmaker to cover Sissoko. SDJ is not that man.

You just know if he goes, there won't be any replacement.

So I want him to stay.
If you want him out, please don't whine on about if afterwards.
    Thank you

£9m, £10m, £50m................. what does it matter? Its all going in Michael Ashley's back pocket anyway!! We can sell in the next 10 minutes, 10 days or 10 seconds before the transfer window shuts................ it wont matter. We aren't signing anybody else, regardless of who goes.

    Exactly... I always wonder why people say they would snap someone's hands off for X amount, when;

    a) They aren't the beneficiary
    b) The actual beneficiary won't reinvest the money into the football club to make the personnel better

Might as well snap their hands off for free, the amount of difference it'll make to our club <ok>

Indeed. The guy is a multi billionaire FFS. He could choose to spunk £500m on NUFC and not even blink................... however he chooses to milk the life, soul and finances out of the club instead. In real terms a million quid is just about **** all to him. He blows more than that on a jolly down the casino. Its got nowt to do with the club being self sufficient and everything to do with the greedy twat lining his already bulging pockets. The finances of NUFC really are small potatoes to him and he will only invest if he HAS to. If he thought we were in serious danger of going down and his investment was in trouble, and NUFC didn't have the money in the bank he would simply reach under his piss stained mattress and pull a few million out. This FFP smoke screen is all about him taking money out of the club rather then reinvesting. We are out muscled financially by just about every club in the PL. We apparently cant compete with Southampton FFS.................. I mean really!!!

So sell for Tiote for £100m or give the ****er away................. it will matter not one jot.

But that's my point you say he is best suited for the role as a sole destroyer but for the past two seasons even when Cabaye was around, we weren't seeing that. He goes down very easy, he's a walking yellow card, he isn't strong enough to hold people off the ball (Yes I think he is no where near as strong as he thinks he is), and he always turns when he wins the ball and recreates the problem he was just trying to prevent. That is just a rather poor defensive midfielder in my opinion, and someone I would not have in my side at all.

The side should not have to play around the defensive mid to get the best defensive qualities out of him. It's one of the roles that should be consistent despite whatever is going on in front of him. His job is to help boss the midfield and support the back 4. He shouldn't need an excellent playmaker directly in front of him to be of any use to the entire side. For me the defensive mid is the goalkeeper of midfield, yeah you can change the guys around and in front of him, have them making this run or that run whatever, but the DM has a job to do, a job I feel Tiote does not complete with satisfactory results.

^^ Exactly my thoughts! If it were a choice of Tiote going for £9m or Sissoko going for £20m I'd rather Tiote goes.
As JPF said, it won't be reinvested (certainly not fully) so we might as well keep the better player.
