    Cotterill puts the record straight.

City manager defends his players and football club.

Steve Cotterill has been “putting the record straight”, defending his players and the football club.

The City boss wasn’t happy seeing Matt Smith being accused of causing injury to both of Scunthorpe’s goalkeepers in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Scunthorpe United.

Both Sam Slocombe and James Severn sustained broken arms in the Sky Bet League One match – but Cotterill wasn’t happy to see his on-loan Fulham striker blamed.

“I’m a bit disappointed in the comments that we were a bit heavy handed,” Cotterill told
    Bristol City Player.

“After the game there wasn’t any insinuation that Matt Smith had hurt their guys – if there had have been I would have spoken about it.

“It was two freak accidents. I want to make it clear that we didn’t want any harm to come to them and we hope they make a speedy recovery.

“But when you couple that with those comments from ‘their manager’ – as [Mark Robins] called me – saying I had spoken about having the best team in the league…I don’t think you’ll find those comments anywhere.

“Maybe that was in defence of the result because I’ve looked at it every day since and we’ve won each time. Perhaps it was a bit of sour grapes...I’ve always spoken well of Scunthorpe, I did in the lead up.

“We don’t have the biggest budget. We know players have gone to other clubs in this league paying two or three times what our players are on.

“I think our budget gets mixed up with the players we can potentially purchase. I’ve always said how lucky we are that we’ve been able to go out and purchase the players we have thanks to Steve Lansdown.

“However, that’s not part of our budget. What gets lost is when we sold Sam Baldock, we were able to cover for all our purchases and have some change.

“I don’t know why teams have to start talking about our budget…it’s not the biggest. I imagine we’ll be up there, but certainly not the biggest.

“I think it’s important to put the record straight sometimes when people talk about things when they don’t know the facts. It’s more fiction.”

Couldn't give two hoots what a two bob manager who managers a two bob club think, I hope we get out this league so we don't have to play the likes of scunny

As for our budget, we are not breaching FFP, just look at the players Preston on bringing in who will be on massive wages

As for Swindle I'm sure their parent clubs pay for their gazillions of loan players..

I'm quite surprised at the level of bitterness shown towards us by Scunthorpe, from their manager down they seem very bitter about losing their little winning streak to us.

Shame Cos they weren't even on my radar and now they will just be remembered as a silly little bitter nothing side?

City do not fall under FFP , its SCMP.

City have a higher than average turn over so will be able to spend higher than most.

It will be interesting to see the clubs accounts in the future. There are players at Ashton Gate who can easily play at a higher level, and did, they will not be here for buttons.

    I'm ignoring it tbh.
I too would be extremely upset if we lost our first and second choice goalkeepers in the SAME game following collisions with the SAME opposition player, ending a good run of form at the same time. Robins now has a GK crisis, so picking up form again is likely to be very difficult. His comments, and those of their fans, were a gut reaction to a very unlucky situation and to be honest they were nothing compared to the type of rant we hear from the likes of Warnock or Wenger every time their teams lose a game.
Hopefully now, after all the replays have been studied he (Robins) and their fans will see it was simply a bizarre coincidence of accidents. If there was any suspicion of intent or malpractice then Scunthorpe would have made an official complaint and there would have been an enquiry.
It'll all blow over and I don't hold it against them. We've moved on and so will they.

The second challenge could have been a penalty.

I thought that too - and I recon the ref would have awarded one if he hadn't gone down injured.
Not how refereeing should work but hey ho.
