I agree, although it is worrying that so many sides that turn up to do little other than clog and punt it long keep causing us problems. I like Sunderland but I hate the football Poyet has them playing. If it takes them getting relegated for him to be sacked then so be it. Didn't like the selection from the start, Townsend should've been in the first 11 and if there was going to be a surprise pick it should've been Paulinho, not Soldado. Really we should've battered them and didn't. Not sure what the linesman was doing, that was as bad as the Adebayor one against Stoke. Who was the ref that day?... Anyway, that lino owes me £60 for ****ing up my bet, I'll be writing to the FA for my compensation.
A game that certainly could have went either way, with Spurs having most of the attacking play, but Sunderland having the most clear cut chances..
Defoe was clearly off the pace and at times, his first time touch was poor. But I can't help thinking he would have buried that rebound off Lloris's gloves had he still been on the pitch.
We got the win, which is the biggest thing, but a very mixed bag otherwise. One more time we hung up the "It’s your turn to score!" sign after taking the lead. After Soldado missed a good chance and Kane hit the post, it felt like just a matter of time. Terrible foul by Jan, though it was an absolutely beautiful free kick. After a bright start, we got back into our old habits of dawdling on the ball and clumping through the middle, no doubt partly due to at least one too many centrallish players on the pitch. I also wish Dembele would only play in attacking roles, since he tends to slow our buildup. On the other hand...we were quite good in the second half, I thought, passing was sharp, and we got the ball wide often enough. Our biggest problem was that Pantilimon was immense. The only things that got past him deflected off a defender or hit the post. They must have blocked a dozen shots as well. Bringing on the wide player we needed did the trick. It was Townsend with a good run down the flank, then the assist for Eriksen’s goal. Eriksen grabs another late winner. I don’t know if we’re the fittest team in the league, but I’m not sure who is if we aren’t. Also, I thought Dier was excellent today. Vertonghen has been quite good on balance, but Dier seemed solider today. The fourth fastest player in the PL (or whatever) should come in handy playing a high line. I thought Vertonghen was offside because the rule requires two defenders to be between the pass recipient and the goal, and their keeper was up the pitch. Either that or it was the rule that states Spurs fans can’t get ten seconds of peace in a PL match. But overall I can’t complain (not that that usually stops me). The only game we’ve lost against PL teams in the last 11,we got robbed by the officials. We’re a young team with a new coach, so we should improve. We’re in the hunt for all but the the top two spots despite having two more pens than any other team in the league. Nice call. For the second time I had a dream about a Spurs game that was upcoming, and for the second time it was right. I woke up thinking we’d won 2-1, then realized the game was still coming up. My dream had the wrong scorers, though. It was Defoe for them and Kane for us (don’t know who scored the other). But the sequence of goals was right as well. (The other dream I had, we beat Man U right before we won at Old Trafford for the first time in decades. Though I guess that isn’t right. I saw the scoreboard and it was 1-2 us, but there was a stoppage in play because Sandro had what looked like a nasty knee injury. So: it was 1-2 at one point, and Sandro did have a nasty knee injury not long after (though not in this game). Now if only I could have a dream about lottery numbers or the stock market...
Great vocal support throughout from your fans. Put our home support to shame I am disappointed to say.
A player is not in an offside position if: he is in his own half of the field of play or he is level with the second-last opponent or he is level with the last two opponents
Now,as a matter of interest, does the FA call the linesman in to HQ and explain the offside rules to him or will it all be swept under the table? Second question.Could the linesman recognise the halfway line or did his contacts drop out? Another thought. If I could have a pound note for every time our passes went sideways...well,I'd be well off!
A fair result today, we were the better side and wanted the 3 points more but Sunderland had more clear cut chances. Cracking turn out from the Sunderland fans today, took up the full allocation and sold it out, fair play to them. As spurcat has said, the noise from them was superb, outsung us all game.
How did the lino give that? Normally they don't cross the halfway line so should be very difficult to give that unless he did. I couldnt see him from where I was
There's a report in NewsNow "Scoreline does not reveal Spurs quality." It goes on to say that while we dominated we should have scored more and that we will improve. Well I hope this improvement comes very soon because as I stated liverpool had two good wins against relegation candidates whereas we struggled. Arsenal had a good solid 3-0 win over Stoke and Saints are showing no signs of fading. Admittedly it was only Newcastle but they achieved the win away from home and bossed the match. Utd are also picking up valuable points. I'm sorry to sound negative amongst all your euphoria lads but this is the way I see it. I hope City win today but it's a big ask as they too are vulnerable and I won't be surprised to see an Arsenal win. There were times in the match yesterday when Sunderland didn't let us settle on the ball and were quite comfortable.
If we had lost or drawn that it would have been a travesty, although we would have only ourselves to blame. We kept getting in great positions down the wing and then having to go backwards and slow it down because of a lack of options in the box. At this point in time Kane needs to be starting up top, although I thought he had another good game yesterday anyway. Dier did nothing wrong at CB and had one good chase back and tackle in particular. Would not be afraid to see him in the lineup there again. Soldado was inefectual and out the game. My first change would have been to switch him and Kane on the pitch. Rose looked great, I was very impressed by him yesterday. Nice, composed ball from Townsend, well done son, more if that please. The game was totally set up for him to do something I thought, good sub poch.
Yes it would have been a travesty but we nearly did lose it despite the gulf in quality. Liverpool have had three away wins on the trot and play Chelsea soon. If we get past Sheff U we have either of those two to play and to put it bluntly, help.
We should still not be fearing Liverpool despite their improved run. Fear leads to suffering. Chelsea will be out for us after the other week, it will be very very tough to do them over again and in a cup final. Although we did just that under Ramos. The spurs thing to do would be lose the semi though so I'll be happy if we can first just get to wembley
I've only seen the highlights on MOTD, but once again our defending scares the crap out of me. If it weren't for some excellent saves from Lloris ( yet again! ) and some piss poor finishing by Sunderland forwards, we would have lost yesterday. IMO, something must be done about our defence, pronto. Our luck, and Eriksen's last minute rescue acts won't last forever.
That's just it, you CANNOT be offside in your own half, only the opponents half, there is some bad decision's that has to one of the worse, pathetic !
