I get what you're saying and I agree but being a big club doesn't stop those in charge running it with a small club mentality. Our transfer policy, for one thing, needs looking at because big clubs don't shop in the bargain basement.
I believe no one will ever know why Sanchez turned us down. I believe there was a wage budget as Suarez was on 200K. The fact that Sanchez has taken the league by storm makes it more annoying but if it is true location was an issue for him not much one can do.
There you have it - exceptions should be made for players like Sanchez. I agree we'll never know the full reasons why he didn't want to come - for what it's worth I think he didn't want to be seen as a swap deal for Suarez. London will always have the pull factor but big names seem happy enough moving into mancland.
this is a true and sensible comment... do take note... until quite recently where markovic, can and moreno actually got a go our big spending ended up with a team largely from last year. when sturridge returns the front 3 will be from last year.. the CM paird... last year... 2 cbs.. last year... so we've two wing backs for 32 odd mil and a cm playing RCB... all 20-22 years old..... hmmm good return form all that cash i think...
very sensible indeed totally agree... buy the really good player when they become available (coughs shaqiri in summer) and then figure it out. don't f'n buy crap to warm a bench... those are like aspas and borini... if onlt such common sense was applied to our club.
And I think this is what Rodgers was trying to do when he signed Lovren, Lallana and Balotelli - all were expected to waltz into the first team and become regulars. Truth of the matter is - Lovren is sh*t, Lallana is a squad player at best and Mario isn't suited to us.
I think you're all right there. With the last comment being the most telling, he basically bought the wrong players.
This is true Im sure lovern was to be someone's first choice, Rodgers given he picked him ahead of sahko Lallana I'm not sure as he was sought pre World Cup so I've no idea if he was a 25 mil brain fart or to replace coutinho in the side Balotelli is a sackable offense and a choice z or something ridiculous Certainly the wrong players but hey perhaps the younger lads he bought were decent... Hardly great given they cost a lot too
It is possible to lose your best player and do better, we proved that when Rush left in the 80's and we bought Beardsley, Houghton and Barnes with the money. But we had a more competent managerial set-up then as well. Every manager makes good and bad buys and BR's no different but the lack of experience throughout the 'decision makers' is obvious. Do we need a DOF?
We finished 4th the season we sold Rooney, the best player we'd had in a generation. I think managers can sometimes use a high profile departure to galvanise the squad as well as using the windfall well. For me where as a club you failed over Suarez, was not having a strong contingency plan in place prior to his departure. Despite his contract length he was always likely to have his head turned (given his previous) and you surely should have planned for that eventuality and had specific replacements scouted, just in case.
Yes we do - FSG should never have compromised their initial structure of having a First Team Coach and a DoF - Rodgers wanted more control and was given it, and went out and bought Allen and Borini for £25m. It wasn't until the Committee assumed more control and signed Sturridge, Coutinho, Sakho etc that we started to strengthen the squad. The DoF will oversee the committee/scouts and Rodgers should focus purely on coaching the players he has at his disposal. The problem is, Rodgers has a big ego and I doubt he would accept any compromise, nor would he accept the help of quality coaches (which is what we need). For this reason, I think he needs to go.
Bit harsh, I'm not convinced by him but he is still learning. He needs to recognise he needs help and asking for it shows strength not weakness.
I find it very funny how you are always adamant that all the perceived flops were signed by Rodgers yet all the successful signings by the committee. It always crops up in your discussions yet for some reason you have absolutely no idea what goes about in the background. Committee or not Rodgers has a say in all signings.
we tried to sign Costa as a step forward / contingency the year before Suarez's inevitable departure we tried to sign Sanchez as his replacement it's not for a lack of trying, we're just not a big enough draw we didn't make mistakes, we just had to make do when the players we really needed chose clubs that were better bets.
The fans might all live in London but the players don't. Although Michael Owen stayed here and flew up and down when he played for Newcastle I heard.
