I think Defoe will miss the deadline now. Midday tomorrow, Jozy probably won't even be out of bed to finalise at his end. :(

PHILADELPHIA – MLS Commissioner Don Garber confirmed between rounds at the 2015 MLS SuperDraft on Thursday that "advanced negotiations" were underway with Altidore.

"We are in very advanced negotiations with Jozy to sign a contract and come back to Major League Soccer, and I think that’s very exciting news," Garber told a throng of media. "We hope to have an announcement with one of our teams as early as tomorrow. You guys could speculate on that, but I’m going to leave the announcement to them.

"Whatever questions you have about what team that is, unfortunately, for as much fun as those questions will be, I’m going to save the excitement for their fans and their market tomorrow."

Jermain Defoe celebrates scoring for Tottenham Hotspur
Sunderland hope to complete the signing of Jermain Defoe today, with the transfer dependent on the finalisation of Jozy Altidore’s return to Major League Soccer.

Provided all necessary paperwork is registered with the Football Association and the Premier League by noon, Defoe will be eligible to face his former club Tottenham Hotspur, with whom he has been training for the last fortnight, at White Hart Lane tomorrow.

And the 32-year-old insists he is eager to prove himself on Wearside following a 12-month spell with Toronto FC.

“I felt so sharp,” he said, of his medical on Wednesday night. “All that hard work has paid off. I can’t wait to start scoring goals for Sunderland.

“Everybody knows how much I love English football and I still feel that I have a lot to offer. People might look at my age, but I have always looked after myself and I hope I can show that with my performances.”

Defoe passed Wednesday’s medical before training with his new teammates at the Academy of Light on Thursday morning, then agreeing personal terms on a two-and-a-half-year contract believed to be worth £70,000 a week. Yet while that outlay is considerable by Black Cats standards, no transfer fee is expected to be involved – despite talk ranging from £6-14 million – provided Altidore’s move in the opposite direction is rubber-stamped.

Sunderland's Jozy Altidore in action against West Ham United

The US striker – who has also been linked with moves to France and Germany – flew to Toronto yesterday and was expected to have a medical overnight.

So long as that passed without complication and personal terms are agreed, it is understood MLS will then allocate the 25-year-old, who scored three goals in 52 appearances for Sunderland following a £6.5m move from AZ Alkmaar 18 months ago, to Toronto.

Defoe’s former franchise was coached by Newcastle United caretaker manager John Carver between February 2008 and April 2009, and is currently captained by ex-Newcastle and Sunderland defender Steven Caldwell, and both have backed the striker to succeed at the Stadium of Light. “He’s the type of player who will score goals anywhere, at any level,” said Caldwell.

“Keep him on the park, keep him fit and give him opportunities. He knows where the net is and he’s proved that.

“He’s still very fit, he’s a forward that thrives on chances.”

Carver added: “I think it’s a good signing for them. I know that when he went to Toronto he did extremely well but he had one or two injury problems, so he didn’t play as much as he should have done.

“I know he did have a problem settling there.

“But I think Jozy has got a great deal going the other way on £80,000-a-week!

“He (Defoe) could have been the big star of the MLS.

“He got something like 11 goals in 19 games. If he had stayed fit, he may have got them into the play-offs but their form fell away when he got injured.

“There are some good players going out there now and it’s a tough league, but he wanted to come back to England and feels like he’s got something to offer.”

I supported Jozy through thin and thin, I argued his case on here and in real life .......... so did many others.

So I think it's very poor of him to skulk off without thanking the Sunderland supporters for the patience they showed.

My respect for him isn't too high tbh .........

After he's been written off as a donkey so many times in the last few days? Are you for real? What the hell does he have to thank Sunderland supporters for? He owes Sunderland supporters a well-written up truthful account of their spite-filled mouths, just like Bent, Gyan and all the other victims of that peculiar Sunderland nonsense do.

After the terrible performances, lack of goals & missed opportunities he couldn't have expected much support.

Instead, he's had his name sung at every appearance, been cheered & willed on by the majority of the crowd.

It seems you're basing your opinion purely on the posts of this forum which are far removed from the reality.

Sadly, it seems he's a typical internet dweller who forms his opinions from message boards & the media.

I agree, he did have his detractors/abusers at games though.

I like him off the pitch, but the fact he hasn't thanked the fans that were patient with him is bad. The same way there's been hardly a word from the club thanking him etc.

I can't disagree with that ....... however, I've honestly never seen a Sunderland player given so much slack in over 40 years.
I've just sat, racking my brains, and can't think of one.

McCarthy was afforded quite a bit of time, when he came back, but I doubt if anyone could beat Jozy.

Hesford was terrible, at times, but avoided too much flak because the whole team was poor.
