If 'they' is Ipswich, then they did have a goal narrowly (but correctly) ruled out for offside. I only watched the last 15 minutes but it looked very comfortable for Southampton. Was also struck by just how poor the Ipswich players were technically, frequently struggling to get the ball under control.
I sat and watched the whole match (yawn), agree it was dire stuff BOTH teams were poor, not sure if it was down to the pitch which looked pretty poor or the weather conditions. Neither side could pass properly and the game was littered with errors. I would imagine most of those attending were very glad the tickets were cheap and I suspect based on that showing it will be a long time before they fill the ground again. Not a great advert for football and even the commentary team were clearly regretting choosing this match to televise
Big crowd against 3rd placed Prem team and absolutely no atmosphere ! I was struck by what appeared to be the complete lack of passion from the fans, they were only a goal behind but there was no roaring on the side to perform. As Supers said it was a terrible match and a complete contrast to the Wet Sham v Everton game the previous night
Gary Lineker @GaryLineker · 11 hrs11 hours ago Well that was a grind. Ipswich are out! Suffolk's sake! Gary Lineker retweeted Ross Lawson @RossLawson03 · 11h 11 hours ago @GaryLineker And the end of the day, they had Norfolk in chance LOL
After watching the West Ham v Everton game on Tuesday the Ippy match was complete dross! I think S'Ton played it perfectly. 3 at the back meant Ippy were less inclined to lump it forward, and when they did Fonte was there winning every single header. When they tried to play it around they had the odd moment but really it was just seeing how long they could hold onto the ball until a sloppy pass and then S'ton could counter.
From what I could hear I thought the three Saints fans there made more noise than the "sold out" contingent of Binmen. Hope Warky, Welly and Guru had a good evening though.
Have to say it was a very poor match overall. Having said that the "way" Ipswich played would have beaten most Championship clubs. They certainly tried. The quality was awful. It is too direct, Southampton just got used to it. If the binners do go up they are gonna be in for a shock, because that "style" just won't work in PL.
It did work for Stoke for a number of years, but they had better players all round. I know its easy to take the piss but was anyone else slightly embarrassed? Some people will have watched that and thought that's what all Championship sides play like!
No excuses for that one last night, it was a bit of a bore, but to be fair soton have done over bigger and more expensive teams than us this year and are 3rd in the prem, they managed the game really well, but the same as Saturday it was hardly one way traffic, can't remember another clear cut chance for them. Our biggest failing was ball retention (even though that twat kept moaning about us passing back to the keeper to try and keep the ball), but we got some positives from the game, Bru & Ambrose played well I thought, again we weren't being broken through on a regular basis, again with a bit more luck we could have taken the lead. overall we got done by a side that worked harder and had more quality, hardly a disgrace. I know our style isn't to everyones liking, but it works and we have got a team costing 10k more than matching a side that cost 50mill. One last thing, the BBC were an absolute disgrace last night with lawro and lineker the main culprits, if they never do another match with Ipswich it would be to soon, as for their research! jesus Christ! apparently we have only just got Ambrose on a free from Birmingham!!!!!!!!!!! and Ty has shot up by 2 inches in a week!!!!!!!!!!
It's true Saints didn't break you down that often but then they didn't need to as they were winning. The emphasis was on Ipswich to have a go and they were so one dimensional, it played straight in to Saints (and in particular Fonte's) hands. It was awful to watch.
Fonte was immense, and we did have basically our whole midfield out but like I said I thought a couple who came in did alright. I think last night was more a case of getting through the game, rather than getting through to the next round. at least we can put all our efforts in extending our, what is it now? 7 point gap over you guys!
Sadly the case these days, but the cup tends to just get in the way for most clubs. I reckon half the clubs in the Premier League and Championship would happily pull out of the whole competition. Shame.
