Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has been ruled out for three months after having ankle surgery.

The 32-year-old had a bony spur removed from his left ankle which the club said has been causing him "significant discomfort" for months.

Manager Arsene Wenger said: "Mikel has had surgery which went well. I have just seen him, he is back with us at the training ground."

The Spaniard last played on 26 November in a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Wenger added: "He had limited mobility in his ankle and some persistent inflammation that had an impact on his calf.

"That meant we had to make the decision to have surgery and it's a proper solution which gives him the best chance to recover."

So this rules him out for the rest of the season. Will Wenger be pushed to go out and get another player or stick with Flamini and Coqs?

Even if we wanted a top DMF, will any club let go of a top DMF during January? That sort of business has to get sorted in the summer. We must however buy a back up quality CB. Anyways, at least we will get to have a better picture of Coq, time for him to step up and prove he's good enough for that spot.

In other injury related news, Welbeck is still out with no return date, so expect him to be out for a year.

Not good news on the Welbeck front, especially when we've sold Pod and Walcott hasn't played much this season.

And we're getting rid of Sanogo, who albeit being useless as he is, a club needs strikers at the end of the day. We only have Giroud available right now. I sometimes do really wonder what Wenger is thinking, and how a top manager can put a top club with supposed major ambitions in such a position as having only 1 fit and proper striker, and only 2 actual established CB's, heck only 6 defenders for an entire season. ****s sake, with Debuchy out, we may have to revert to playing Monreal at CB if one of our CB's get injured, and does anyone really envision our CB's to have a fully fit 3 months, especially now when the games will be coming thick and fast from end of January-April?

We badly need one more body at the back.

Well he does have January to strengthen the squad, so i'm waiting to see what he does. But prior experience doesn't fill me with much confidence.

Arteta now being said 6 weeks rather than 3 months and Welbeck 2 weeks. Wilshere 4 weeks if that interests anyone at all.

6 weeks to recover from the surgery. Probably 3 weeks from now until he can start basic gym and mobility work.

From six weeks he'll need another 2-3 weeks to get match fit (ish) so 8-9 in Total.

That's the standard timeline for this kind of thing. Although its getting quicker as surgeries get less and less obtrusive.

Welbeck was meant to be this super fit player who rarely picks up injuries and then he came to Arsenal and he now has the old '2 to 3 weeks' problem.

You do pick up a few more as you get on in years but..yeah, annoying. Looked innocuous when it happened at the time too which is even more frustrating. Not as frustrating as Giround's ankle knack for kicking a ball but still...
