Michu's valuation (c£20m per Laudrup) was based on his first season with us. His lifetime average dud not reduce his valuation.
an excellent deal for Chelsea but they did take a risk on that one as Costa had never performed in the Prem and had never done anything much impressive for a club other than Atletico....Bony has done it in the Czech Republic, the Dutch top flight and 2 seasons running in the Prem for us. Good comparison though as they are similar players and are both coming into their prime at 26. Atletico got £7m more for Costa.
Agreed - I was hoping that the transfer fee would have been £30m. Costa was bought as the No.1 striker for Chelsea, but it could be that Citeh regards Bony as a "back-up"?
True, but then he wasn't used as a striker for most of his career....also he had just forced his way into the finest Spain squad of all time on the back of his performances for Swansea. Also, £20m is a lot less than £30-35m and he didn't move for that kind of money anyway.
Agreed - so Michu's value was basically assessed on his time at Swansea rather than over his lifetime goal ratio!
Of course his life time performance reduced his valuation. Michu has scored 72 goals in 321 games = 72 / 321 = 22%. On linear scale used above, 20 million was probably about right. But as has been pointed out, he was a more prolific scorer as a #9 than a #10 or deeper midfield role where he played for most of his career, which further points to a valuation that may have been too low as a #9.
Interesting Yankee....I've been thinking lately that if Bony had done what he did in a Swansea shirt for Liverpool or Arsenal he'd be changing hands for £40-50m. Your stats put him right at the top of my totally guessed price bracket. I would have been happy with £35m. I expected £30m (based on what the club was saying). Disappointed with £25m myself. As I posted earlier it works out at roughly £10m pure profit (without knowing the tax details)...great for the club but £10m on top would have helped us to achieve so much more. He is that good.
Also Taff. He never went for £20m. That figure came from Laudrup who was just trying to drum up the price.
Absolutely...it's just that I and some others reckon that we had set our sights a little too low. Michu is irrelevant anyway as he never made that transfer so the market decided he wasn't worth it at that point (might have been worth even more if he didn't get injured mind). Any manager can say X player is worth £Y....on that basis Pintado was valued at £7m once upon a time wasn't he When trying to gauge what your asset (Bony) is worth you need to deal in absolutes. Your Costa comparison was a good one. He moved for £7m more. He is the same age as Bony. Is a similar type of striker. When you compare his overall career record with Bony's he doesn't come out quite so good as Bony. Was unproven in the Prem, whereas Bony had shown in both of his Prem seasons that he can score goals against these defenders in this country given some decent service (less risky). Moved in the summer rather than the January (Isn't there supposed to be a premium for January transfers?). Has had a serious knee injury (was out injured for a period in his last days with Atletico also). Similarly to Bony he had signed a contract extension with Atletico the season before he moved (2018) following interest from Liverpool.....in this contract a release clause of £32m was inserted (who knows at who's behest). We got £7m less.....how is that so? You could also compare the Bony transfer to Lukaku's etc. but comparing his value to Michu's notional value is like comparing his value to Pintado's, a comparison which will lead you no closer to reaching the correct price point whatsoever.
Terror - as I wrote earlier in the thread, I was hoping for £30m, so £25m is lower than my aspiration. As for Michu, I was merely demonstrating that Laudrup's £20m valuation was based on "current" form, Yankee had seemed to argue that Costa's career record was more relevant than his last season at Atletico where he netted 36 times in 52 games.
Not yet still love my Bony Mac Desktop, maybe end of the week when it has all sunk in!...................
Whatever you base the comparison on it has to be consistent. I used career output since IMO it is a better reflection of the player and not over one season, as in the case of Michu or perhaps Costa this season, which might catch a black swan season and therefore not be a true reflection of value. The numbers I quoted for each player - Suarez, Bony, Costa, Lukaku and Michu - are based on career goals per game, which captures the player's output over time. Over time players trend from playing at lower levels to high levels in the game - it's their goal output that moves them through the levels, this output should be at a fairly consistent level. Laudrup's value on Michu may have been plucked out of thin air at the time, but based on Michu's career and the scale established by the other players that I listed it was a reasonable valuation. Career goal output is but one factor that is part of a player's holistic value, but for a forward it is the "money" factor. This obviously would not work as well for midfield players or defenders. For strikers however, it provides simple but telling yardstick.
Michu a sensation when he arrived so of course you'd say 20 million Bony amazing player of course you'd say 30 million
The trouble with this example of yours is it simply doesn't fit, and I'll tell you why, the 'Car' has no say, and no comprehension of what's going on, so if I want to sell the car with faults and all because I think I've had the best out of the engine, then I will probably take the £2500 and cut my losses on repair bills that could have well been coming my way. Now with Bony, he is not an inanimate object with no say at all, but very much part of the deal, matter of fact he could say to the owner 'I want this deal' and of course we could have said you'll go when we tell you, but then how many goals will a very disgruntled Bony score second half of the season, after we had been greedy and ruined a career dream move for him? The point is this, you don't live in the real world of these negotiations, but Huw Jenkins and the board does, and I'm pretty sure that we got the best deal possible given all circumstances., and the board has dropped nothing in my view....................
Only just noticed this, and have made the same point. Miggins you make more sense than many of the other girls on her, well done!..........
