TBF no Newcaslte fan ever mentions this mythical waiting list, only SAFC fans. In the Robson and Keegan years, tickets sold out within an hour game in game out, it's feasible that 20000 who wanted tickets didn't get them each game, not season tickets though. 52000 every home game, not quite but we rarely fall below 50k. Jermain Defoe laughs off Newcastle interest

Jermain Defoe has laughed off the idea that Newcastle United showed any real interest in trying to sign him on deadline day of the last transfer window.

The striker has spoken about a ‘mad’ twenty four hours and said that he knows Harry Redknapp and QPR were interested in him.

However, speaking to The Guardian, Defoe admits he was surprised and that he laughed when seeing on TV that he might be going to St.James’ Park.

The striker hasn’t ruled out returning to the Premier League in the January window despite claiming he’s happy at Toronto FC, despite the lower level of football.

Jermain Defoe on transfer deadline activity;

“Your agent phones you and says: ‘Right, this club has just called me – blah-blah-blah, they want to speak to Toronto. They want to do a deal – either a loan or something permanent’.”

Going to QPR;

“As a player you are just sitting back, not really knowing what’s going on. Then on Sky Sports News, on deadline day, I was going to QPR. The transfer talk kicked off and it was crazy.

“Harry [Redknapp] wanted me. I remember speaking to Harry months ago and he said: ‘Yeah, in the off-season you’re going to come train and play for us and score goals.”

‘Jermain Defoe might be going to Newcastle’;

“But I was at home seeing other things – like ‘Jermain Defoe might be going to Newcastle’. I’m thinking: ‘What? That’s news to me.’ It was mad.

“I can’t say what’s going to happen (in January) because I really don’t know, but I like Toronto. It’s a really nice city. And it’s amazing when the sun’s out.”

It paints a bit of a strange mental picture of players, just like fans, sitting and watching all the Sky nonsense on deadline day and laughing at the made up stories.

 

Why on Earth would I bet on that? Anyway, even if I did and lost, I could just pull a smug and leave for a couple of weeks before returning
