I'm hoping the first one mate. If he's having a medical it probably means they've agreed terms and he's willing to come, pass the medical, sign on the dotted line, hold up obligatory shirt for press. But as you say SAFC V Soon is different

 

I think he's more likely to give Defoe the same thankless task that he's given Fletcher, Wickham and Altidore. Essentially, what he's looking for is a Shearer or a Drogba, i.e. someone who will sweat up front on his own and get enough goals to save our necks. And a 1 in 3 games scorer like Defoe isn't the answer any more than the others were.

I've some faith left in Poyet, but his stubbornness is undoubtedly his Achilles heel.

What all 5ft 6 of him with nobody close trying to deal with two 6ft+ CBs every game? The lad will get murdered out there. The lad runs channels well, this gut feeling that Gus won't change the system means the only place to put him is in the channels as an inside forward. If Gus plays him up front in this system then he really has lost the plot imo.
