I voted for her but I'm probably biased being from ireland! I do genuinely believe it was the best goal. Disappointed she didn't win. It got some coverage at home!

She should have won it no question. The goal was on a different level to the others.

Great goal, but who was watching? There's no one in the stands, probably wasn't televised, looks like mobile footage! James' goal was scored with the whole world watching, against top opposition.

Rodridgues shouldn't of won it, it wasn't even the best goal of the World Cup, let alone the year!!

There was a brilliant overhead kick scored in the lower leagues last weekend. Will it ever see the light of day? Probably not because it wasn't Rooney or even Delap.

It seems to me that the first decision is who the player is, then what club HE plays for, then the competition and only then the quality of the goal itself.

Can you find a link to it so that we can watch it..? Or perhaps tell us who the teams were so that the more interested can go to the Football League Show and find the game on iPlayer..?

Roche all day long. Far better teckers than Rodriguez.

Apparently part of the judging process was to include the circumstances in which it was scored and the quality of the opposition. On that basis it's not an unfair decision, regardless of the fact it's clearly a wonderful goal.

James' goal WAS fantastic, let's not forget. I'm struggling to think which goal at the WC topped it, Saint_Ford?

    Cahill's volley was magnificent.

You're kidding me..? He hit that so perfectly it was not true. The contact he had on that ball was world class. Remember also that he was taking a ball from midfield and it didn't touch the ground until it bounced off the bar into the goal. There's no way he miss-hit that ball. In fact, he hit it so perfectly he barely had to add power to it:

And FIFA are being pathetic so you'll have to watch this video on Youtube.

It came off the side of his foot. If he'd hit it with his laces, he'd probably have missed, or found the keeper. This is just the way I'm interpreting it, but I don't think he meant to catch it like that.

As TSS said, Tim Cahill's was the best for me, James' was a great goal, but it's a hell of a lot easier to set up a volley for yourself than it is to hit one coming over your head like Cahill did, with your weaker foot.

I see what you're saying, but for me the beauty of James' goal wasn't so much the volley itself, but the way he set it up for himself.

I'd have to put RVP's header as second best. Unbelievable head tekkers. This is all highly subjective, of course.

Edit: just to clarify, I was only ranking WC goals.

I think Roche's goal was better technically than James but then again it wasn't in the World Cup against international opposition so I understand people voting for it.

I always think people are reluctant to give awards for an overhead kick....very exciting to see (#Iwastherepelle), but always a touch of desperation and luck about them.

Didn't Rooney get goal of the season? I can't actually remember.
