I fully agree, but with players like Bony, that £28 million personally, would go towards buying 3 top players. That would significantly strengthen the squad to challenge for the Europa slots. Personally I think we should be challenging 7-10 from now on, but as other clubs around and below us have more money, we need to sell players like Bony when the financial reward is right to improve the squad further.

Not sure why we are fretting on capital gain being made, as it's all part of the game, and if we are to grow then these deals are essential for us to climb up to the next rung on the ladder, besides we are pretty much through another (4th) successful season at the top table, and looking at another £80 Milliion Premier League pay-off going into our 5th season, so stop whinging on the top four clubs as we may well be there one day!............<cheers>

Then although there were big clubs the monies spent on foreign players and the like bears no comparison to days game. Bony for £30,000.000 has gone to a club who quite recently were treading water and have if some stories are true bought him as a stop gap , all the big clubs of that era brought through a lot of local talent and certainly in the main were British ,compare that to day's game .We had a small squad because we couldn't afford a bigger one based on again income because we certainly didn't have a sugar daddy ,after the novelty had worn off the gates dropped so did the income streams , how many shirts sales were there not many .Blackburn won the PL because of one man's love of the Club along with spending a sizeable potion of his wealth other than them who else in a comparable size has and is likely to win it .Utd had a poor start to the season and guess what they bought and spend large sums just to try to maintain the status quo and although not likely to win it they'll finish higher than us because they and others can buy success , we can't .

It's all relative on the money front .... back then United were still the giant they are today .... them, Arsenal, Chelsea etc could all pack 50,000+ into their old grounds on every home match and make plenty of surplus cash from that revenue stream. Today revenue streams have diversified to include broadcast / media and commercial revenue streams; but we enjoy the system broadcast revenue stream as United, etc. based on our finish in the league and other variants.

Also, back then English players were not as crap as they are today - look at the dominance of Forest, 'Pool, Villa in European competitions back then. Today the top quality predominantly comes from overseas.

I agree , and that shows the negative impact buying foreign has been on home-grown talent, Exeter are ecstatic that one of their own has moved to a PL club , Keegan was bought by Liverpool from Scunthorpe and there are other examples out there and wasn't he one of the few British players to go abroad , how times change only now we import rather than export .Our buying power is still limited even though as you rightly point out about broadcast income but you've omitted the fact that the top 4 more often than not play CL football which is broadcast extensively and something again we atm can not aspire to as those clubs gamble as seen by Citeh on buying players who may not win them the league but will go a long way in getting them into top 4 position ,I'm afraid there's a huge gap between us and the top 6 or so sides ,Sunderland for example during their time in the PL in total have spent £297m on signing , could you ever imagine us doing something similar

Yankee at that is why we slid down the league as quickly as we climbed it, because we overspent trying to keep up with the established clubs and ran out of money very quickly.

Yankee it was a different era where teams like Norwich,Ipswich and villa and many others were top of the league and teams like chelsea, man city were relegation fodder because football was all about football in those days and not about how much money you had. Them days are long gone and it is money that determine football today and i absolutely Hate how football has gone. It's no longer a fair playing field any more. We are at about our limit and like valley said we are not going to win the league and our main aim is to try and fight for a European place and do our best in the cups. There is a massive gulf between the big clubs and teams like us and it will always be like that. Our best days is when we beat a big club but in reality we are one of the also rans with the other 80% of the teams in the premiership.

Which is exactly why your campaign against and continued derision of a manager who had us in the top 10, won us a trophy and was in 12th place with a last 32 tie in the Europa Cup v Napoli lined up was/is so utterly ridiculous :)

You defined our success as achieving; 1) top 10, 2) trying to qualify for Europe and 3) to do well in the occasional cup.
Our ex-manager who you started a hate campaign against and continue to deride at every opportunity had us 1) in the top 10, 2) not only qualified for Europe but holding our own in the last 32 with a shot at winning the trophy and 3) led us to our 1st and only cup triumph (don't try and repeat your bollocks about this not being his achievement but Curt's <laugh> as I have pointed out to you on multiple occasions that half of the team were Laudrup signings).

By your own logic he had us at our pinnacle and you are a twat for complaining <laugh>

Valley - Not going to go over it again just couldn't resist the chance to rub his nose in it.
