Interesting that not a single goal out of the longlisted top 10 was from the Champions League, the world's premier club competition. No Champions League goals made the top 10 in 2013 or 2012 either. Is that a sign of Fifa having a dig at Uefa, I wonder, or has there not been a CL goal worthy of inclusion for three years in a row?
Roche's goal was a great individual effort. If it had been a team goal the standard of the opposition would have to be considered, but credit where credit's due - we would have been drooling over that goal if a City player had scored it.
Drooling indeed, but utterly gobsmacked & dumbfounded had it appeared in a poll as one of the top three world goals of the year
I wouldn't even question that, were it not obvious that goals scored by men had to take place at a certain level to be picked.
I had ITV News on last night. There headline. "Roach robbed of Puskas award". WTF She was beaten by a 30 yard volley in the World Cup. They made it sound like a miscarriage of justice.
The other two were better goals anyway. Roach's was a risky inclusion as now they have no excuse not to include every other world class goal scored all over the world on school playing fields every weekend. It should never have even been considered.
I voted for Van Persie's goal. Similar goals scored by Graziano Pelle and Charlie Austin earlier in the season were better than Roach's. James Rodriguez's goal was excellent, but a bit, well, ordinary. We've all seen chest control > volley > top corner. If Roach's goal doesn't get onto YouTube, it doesn't get a mention. Similar for the countless goals scored in the lower leagues. It's special because the standard is poor. The goal stands out as being incredible in comparison with others scored in the division. I don't think she'd even get a shot off nor do I think she'd get past the keeper if she tried that in the Premier League (unless Alex Bruce was marking her of course). For me, the award goes to the 'wow' factor. I got that off RVP's goal the most.
I dont understand why that is "hilarious". It's a completely bog-standard own goal. This is much better, but still not hilarious:
Gender doesn't come into it being football or any other sport, women are excelling in all areas of sport and the obvious thing is the physical capacity of men to succeed at a higher level. If women were built more like men, and in things like shot put and javelin they nearly are, then they could be regarded as equal. I will say this having watched a few women's football matches they have yet to sink to the level of the cheating, diving, conniving, downright conceit of men's football. Its not just the playing of the actual sport that women come up against prejudice, remember the female lines man (woman) she makes a mistake and all the world knows about it whereas the male linesmen/ref are appalling week in week out. In snooker there are now a few female referees who are just as competent as the men in fact one such woman Michaela Tabb referees pool as well as snooker and as of yet I have not known of any of the women snooker referee being suspected of taking a bribe such as one snooker ref alleged to have done a few years back. In the case of the woman linesman (woman) I think she has been incredibly brave taking that challenge and look forward to women referees because today's male refs leave a lot to be desired and at times certainly need their eyes testing or so Garry Lineker and co say. I could also mention certain teams have women on their staff attending on the field injuries, even in the premier league so I don't see any problem with a woman scoring a goal being considered worthy of merit.
