A strange article suggesting that awarding the Puskas award to Roche (if it happens) will damage women's football and suggests if she wins it the public voting system for this award should be changed. He has no argument that it shouldn't be in the top 3, but feels that public voting can be biased. No, really. The public may have agendas...who would ever have thought of that!! Even a panel of footballers could have agendas. No one's life depends on this and it is very unlikely that a woman will get this far very often, so I don't think the world will end if she wins.

Seems to be rather a case of "my opinion is better than anybody else's", to be honest. He may feel the other goals are better - fine. Other people may not and that does not automatically equate to positive discrimination. I really doubt people in large numbers will vote for a goal purely because it was scored by a woman.

Besides which, if we're going to talk about public having biases when it comes to these sort of awards I notice it hasn't addressed the people who think women's sport isn't proper sport and wouldn't vote for anything involving a woman if it was a 1 in a million style shot. (Twitter provides plenty of examples of these types of people, who exist just as much as the other type do.) Surely the two mindsets even each other out so everybody else can actually concentrate on voting for whichever goal they genuinely think is best.

As a matter of fact if you really want to get into public biases you could discuss the fact these awards sometimes benefit from the name of the player rather than what they actually did. And the article itself already mentions club/country biases...

I don't think the article is badly meant, and it does suggest ways of supporting women's sport, but I think it does a huge disservice to suggest people are only voting because of it involving a woman.

...Okay, I'll shut up now. :p

I haven't voted, but I might have felt inclined to vote for her because she was a woman...kind of in an underdog spirit, but like Templar says others may have not voted because she's a woman. Any public vote opens itself to biases whether for gender, team or nationality. However, it's nice to have an award that isn't decided by the same panel of professionals.

It's easily the best goal of the three.

Personally I feel it should only be awarded to goals scored in the top competitions. The pressure and quality of opposition is far greater. I played as striker for a few years when I was young and scored some screamers. But could I do it in the World Cup?

    Exactly.
