It's not really much different to what we've been doing over their for the last 30 years, although on a much smaller scale of course. We send our brainwashed kids to blow up people and steal oil, we get their brainwashed kids blowing up ours in revenge. Dying for a country/belief seems so romantic to teenagers, and utter foolishness to those a bit longer in the tooth. so sad.
Example? Off the top of my head, pretty much any comment about immigration made by Farage. The intelligent left, particularly politicians and like-minded commentators, has been extremely clever in labelling anybody that questions immigration as racist. It has become their mantra and is very effective, to the extent that those with perhaps less intelligence, but similar political sympathies, take this as received opinion. You don't need to fool all of the people some of the time, just some of the people all of the time. Look at Gordon Brown labelling even a lifelong Labour voter "a bigoted woman" simply because she had quite reasonable concerns about immigration. As far as some on the Left are concerned - I'm clumsily differentiating between Left and Right for the purposes of this topic, but appreciate it is not as simple or clear cut as that - immigration is a taboo subject and you're immediately stifled and forced to defend yourself against accusations of racism the moment you dare question the current state of affairs. It's a very effectve tactic. It is interesting how one can be labelled racist for wishing to preserve a certain culture or way of life against perhaps an incoming population wishing to preserve their own culture or way of life despite their immigration to your shores. Why do some on the Left fiercely defend the right of the immigrant to preserve their culture yet vilify those for whom this has a profound impact on their own status quo? What if, as in some instances, this incoming culture begins to impose itself and replace the incumbent culture?* I'm going to sign off on this subject now as I'm sure I'm not only poorly articulating the issue, but certainly over-simplifying things and using too-convenient generalisations. I suspect some will ignore what I've written anyway and instead accuse me of something else. I'm going to get into trouble. *I realise I could be accused of hypocrisy here given this country's history of settling in other countries and imposing its own culture, but I wasn't there then and thus can only talk of the here and now.

no, it's the endemic and ingrained racism, the rescinding of rights based on race which started up again in 1999 when they had their common law rights taken away so they could be 'legally' evicted from the areas of the Olympic park so the world wouldn't see what Australians were actually like. there's a reason they are the shortest lived race on the planet, if it were alcoholism as Aussies always try to claim, without even looking at the reason why, then the inuits would live shorter lives due to their far harsher environment and chronic alcoholism.

You're right, Uber. The 'Left' have handled the immigration issue very badly. The Gordon Brown example is a case in point (he said she was a 'sort of' bigoted woman, by the way) - he just didn't understand her concerns. How do we 'preserve our culture' though? How do we define it? It's constantly changing, and always has been. We are a mongrel nation.

I don't think anybody interested in understanding different points of view would support thoughtless labelling, though it's not all one way. I think I'll resist the long response, because although I think we (i.e. you and I and some others) could have a civilized virtual discussion (probably not ending in agreement) I suspect this topic will just open a shedload of work for the mods, and this is, after all a football forum, as I noted to Swords earlier in this thread. Also, it's a bit depressing, this is a deeply divided country, the immigration issue is a sympton not a cause in my view. An important thread, if there can be such a thing, RIP to those who lost their lives in France.

I find it strange that SOME theists find it easy to cast off the possibility of anybody elses 'god' but can't tollerate it when people do the same to theirs. Speak for yourself. My son is 9 and it's a long time since I started explaining to him that the modern armed forces are all about the children of ordinary people being maimed and killed in order to protect the interests of the super-wealthy. He gets it.
