I'm dead proud to be a Geordie, I've a really strong Tyneside accent. I've experienced what the OP has with people changing their accents, when I used to travel to Northern Ireland to visit our relatives with a particular cousin as soon as we got off the ferry at Larne she would speak with an embarrassing accent. She lived in this borough all her life and it just got annoying at the finnish. :emoticon-0145-shake

Am from Shields and my lass is from Gateshead, love to wind her up about not being a Geordie, and she hates it when I call her a Tynesider!

I knew a Man U fan in school. He use to walk around chanting songs and just making a fool of himself.

Eventually I called him a glory supporter so he claimed his Dad was from the Manchester area, I asked him where his Dad's from and he said Derby <doh>
I went on to call his Dad a glory hunter xD

I think there is some confusion as to the subject of being a Geordie and to being a Newcastle fan. Newcastle United are a big team in the main city of the area and as such whilst all fans should hopefully have some support for their local (probably non league team-for me North Shields) to support a big team anyone local to that team regardless of whether that is north south east or west is quite entitled to choose to support that team and traditionally loads of fans for Newcastle come from the Durham area. Family connections also play a big part in this though as having family/parent/s from the area is also likely to lead to someone, quite reasonably in my opinion to supporting say Newcastle despite living in maybe sunderland possibly for reasons of work etc. Historically in the old mining days many people moved around the whole area to follow the work which is why this has happened and why many sunderland fans come from the traditional mining areas of Blyth Bedlington and Ashington. As to the question of being a true Geordie this is something much confused and regularly disputed and in truth no-one knows the true definition but whilst for me coming from Durham would not be classed as being a Geordie it would also not neccessarily be classed as being a mackem and these people have every right to be proud of where they are from and to support the toon and even mackems with family connections do too. Also whilst the title mackem is modernly used as a derogatory term by some to refer to sunderland fans it is really a non derogatory title refering to the way people speak and applies to many in the sunderland and Durham areas and has nothing to do with Football at all. As for "plastic" fans whilst a most of these are seen as "Glory Hunters" and are linked to Man Utd Liverpool etc sadly for many reasons people known as plastic fans are attached to ALL teams including Newcastle United and is due to the relative success and with it publicity and tv coverage of any team at a given time. Lets have the Toon fans sticking together and getting behind the lads, God knows they need that support the way things always seem to go for us. Keep the Faith.

When I wore my toon top in Florida (97/98 season i think) a guy came running out of a shop and offered to buy it off me for $200. Being a kid and the time I had to ask the oldies and they obliged. Got a new toon top when I got home. Random moment in my life!!!

I had people like that at my school too. Where I stay in central scotland everyone supports Rankers/Sellick,Man utd/Chelsea. I know a few toon fans who I travel down with fairly often. Its the amount of Citeh tops that have started copping up that worries me!!!

Hmm ... I wonder if I know him? :) I know of three other Toon supporters over here. Two are from the Newcastle area and one is a local like me.

Funnily enough another Toon supporting friend of mine who is from South Shields moved back to the UK last year, otherwise I would have known four.

Four isn't many out of a population of about 60,000 though is it! (although i dare say there are more than that) You can't swing a cat without hitting a Man U or Liverpool fan though they are everywhere.

No sorry just a figure of speech. I would never do something so cruel to a cat as to knowingly put it in contact with a Man U or Liverpool fan. :police:
