U2. Pretentious crap written, performed and peddled by an egomaniac poseur, and the band included a guitarist who gave himself a poncy pseudonym but couldn't really play guitar worth ****.

    The Edge, my arse.

My two daughters both expressed all their adolescent angst through the music of Nirvana. Having listened to all of it (involuntarily, as it reverberated through the walls of their bedroom), I can see why Kurt Cobain killed himself. If I wrote songs like that, I would have too, but try telling that to 1990's teenagers.

I find that most people who say the Beatles were crap, are people who weren't born in the 1950's. They'd see things differently if they had been.

    For me it's Coldplay.

When they release their greatest hit's it should be called music to watch paint drying too!

The Beatles wrote catchy tunes and whether you're 5 or 55 we all like catchy tunes. Music should be without pretence. It should be fun. I love fun music; hate pretence.

Mate, they don't need to do water boarding in Guantanamo Bay, just strap the terrorist suspects into a chair with Coldplay playing on loop.

I can see redeeming features in U2 and Nirvana (before they believed their own hype), but the prog rock dross which dominated the '70s before punk/new wave was unforgivable. Ten minute songs with self indulgent guitar solos was the pits. Anything over two minutes is a waste. In the sixties, you couldn't get radio airplay if your songs were over two and a half minutes. The early Beatles, Beach Boys and Phil Spector stuff was all within this limit - and is so much better for it.

Only ten minutes...? You obviously didn't listen to Emerson Lake and Palmer. Karn Evil 9 came in three movements and started on the first side of Brain Salad Surgery and went right through the entire second side. And not a guitar in sight.

Actually, I rather liked it. Again, I was of that generation and saw it as a product of its time. Self indulgence maybe, but it existed in its niche and for those who didn't like it there were always plenty of two and a half minute singles around. Gary Glitter made loads of them.

Lots of bands on people's lips that I used to like, U2, Queen, Pink Floyd and a few others. Their early stuff was great, some of it I loved, Like War (U2), Queen's first 4 albums, and Dark Side. I seldom listen to them any more though and I never listen to any of their new songs or even albums made in the last 20 years or more..

For bands I would say who are overrated I would have to first categorise them as being actually rated by a large number of people so bearing that in mind I would propose Led Zeppelin, some of their albums just depress me. The Stones I feel are a very average band and The Stone Roses, I just don't get them, some of their tunes are a tad catchy but they are repeptitive as hell, but the worst of the lot has to be Oasis, a very poor imitation of their musical idols. Blur are also guff. I also ****ing detest with a passion, Scouting for Girls, not that they are rated by anyone I just had to squeeze them in.

And Bon Jovi, a lesson in what happens when Rock goes Corporate.

Muse anyone? Don't get me wrong, I think they are talented musicians but I just don't bye into the their amazing crap that I often hear.

I also think Matt Bellamy has his head up his own arse!

I've seen Muse live twice and they are a pehenomenal band, the stuff they've put out in the last 5 or 6 years has not been great though.

Also I forgot to mention The Clash, apart from one or two songs = ****e.

The Clash, like many, started well but lost their way. They did too much reggae and ska influenced stuff - and were too political. They were best when they stuck to fast paced punk rock like "Tommy Gun", and "White Riot". Their cover of "I Fought The Law" is great.

Muse are a modern day prog rock group = pretentious.

The most overrated band often have more style than substance - Guns'n'Roses, Bon Jovi and the like could have been so much better than they cut out the pretentiousness, the ego, the performance and the style and stuck to writing songs. Ditto Kiss and Led Zeppelin. I'm not a fan of Motorhead particularly but the simplicity of it all makes them far more palatable.

    Franz Ferdinand.

They don't have good enough songs. Like Muse, too arty. More style than substance.

Would prefer to hear Les Ferdinand

Oasis, never did get it with this band, the feuding brothers remind me of the same stunt between The Beatles and The Stones which was a ruse for increased record sales. Still everybody to their own.

Some of their early stuff was fine. If they'd written two minute poppy rock songs in the mould of the early Who, they would have been OK - and an antidote to the dance music of the time, but they became all grandiose - like The Beatles in later years - and ended up doing pretentious nine minute epics.
