I genuinely wouldn't, not right now anyway. We need someone that will provide an immediate impact, Berahino won't do that. I'm usually against signing one season wonders, Berahino's not even got to that stage yet! I agree about the price rocketing which is exactly why I wouldn't sign him at all. Much cheaper but equal in quality options available, we need to employ and use a scouting system
Much better to buy him now for £5m and use him another option in games (he'll offer more than Lambert and Borini probably would) and for £5m if he works out well you have a bargain and if not, you sell him for similar amount. I know what you're saying but £5m is a no brainer... it's when you get to £15m it becomes trickier..
Yeah but the going rate for a donkey is 10 mil guys Borini 10-14 mil Balotelli 16 mil Etc etc Sorry but 5 mil is a fee for a league 1 player (if a prem club came in, Ox cost 10) You guys know full well 15 is prob the min you lay out
IMO, if its the right player than the cost doesn't really matter so long as you can afford it. Obviously, you still want to get the best possible deal but the number one priority should be getting the best possible team together. Another thing I have said in the past is regarding free transfers. If I wouldn't be prepared to pay for a player, why would I want him for free? Money is money, just because someone is cheap, young, full of potential, proven in this league, etc does not mean they will make for a good signing. Berahino may well turn out to be a quality player but he's not going to change our season around is he? Right now, we need quality players that would make a immediate impact. We have plenty of youngsters that could well see us good for the next five years or more already.
come on Gez - whilst Rodgers may have to actually say 'yes' to deals, he clearly has his own targets or he'll have players imposed on him. Just because he says yes doesn't mean that the player is his preference. Going back to Lucas - anyone else have a horrible feeling that we'll sign Delph as a replacement?
Yup, absolutely. £5m is peanuts in this day and age for a young English striker that has got 10 goals in the league this year and has pace and good movement he would be a good buy. Anyway, pointless convo because no way would we get him for £5m. I think he'll be a good player and would fit in with your team much better than Balotelli/Lambert/Borini do but at the moment, it would be a risk to spend anything over £10m given how he hasn't done it on a consistant basis yet.
Rather than spend any money on Berahino, how about we target a player with good, high level experience and has played well consistently for 18 months plus.
And £5m is a lot of money to burn when your skint and in need of first team players! Without doubt he would fit the team better than those three but that's no reason to blow £24m (the actual rumoured figure). For that money, we could be getting a lot better and less risky signing. Plus, we've already got Origi for that potential gamble.
2 problems with that. 1.All the ones in the Prem would cost too much or are not the quality we want. 2. It would involve looking outside England and offering wages needed to entice them. I really wish we'd stop looking at Prem players at average teams and thinking that somehow they'll become greater when moving to us.
No manager gets all his preferences, that's football. You can kid yourself all you want but Brod wanted each and every one of those players. Whether he initially suggested the player or not is pretty much irrelevant.
True but then, we could get better quality abroad whilst paying a lower transfer fee so what we save can pay the extra wages
Agreed, I wouldn't want to pay£24m for him as at the moment he's not worth it. Like I've said I'd risk £10m on him as given his age and the fact he's English you'd 100% make 50% of that back if he fails to live up to the promise, however I'd rather get rid of Borini/Lambert/Balotelli for something around £20m and put all of it into a first team striker. Not sure who is available that's the only problem... I'd also need to find £20m to get Pjanic and £10m for a new keeper.. not sure where all that money can come from though.
Exactly - we need to get away from PL players completely. There is little value in this market. Players we should have targeted instead of spunking £27m on Lallana and Lovren - Firmino, Lavazette, Volland, Aubagymeng.
It's not irrelevant because if Rodgers had his way, this team would look completely different with the likes of Bertrand, Williams, Vorm etc.
It was £44m on Lallana and Lovren. 48 if you include Lambert. Gets worse doesn't it, We gave Soton £48m for 3 average players.
