Page, I used the term fairytale deliberately to highlight that the common truths forwarded by both sides are just that and don't stand up to close scrutiny.

So, why did Ireland increase its food exports during the 'famine'?

Who controlled the Irish agricultural markets - the Irish it transpires thereby ending the notion that the English let the Irish starve.

Who organised the Irish land clearances? For the most part it was IRISH landowners. Slightly different from the absentee English of the myth hey!

Was there any difference between the Irish and the Scottish/Welsh clearances? Essentially not.

As for the potatoes then Ireland was well aware that blight had been ravaging European crops for at least 4 years before. Even though newer types of potatoes resistant to blight were already available they appear not to have been adopted in Ireland. Or if you like the English prevented them being imported!

Complaint about stating a fact, and it's deemed as an unacceptable comment

Very apt given the subject matter of the thread and today's events

in fairness I know you didnt tell a joke but you brought up the spuds and then said it was lighthearted.

but its well and good saying it on here , if you were in a pub having the debate on here with all of us would you have said what you did to sisu's face or in my earshot or would you have thought better of it ?

Tobes, you are better than that. Calling some reveared ancient icon a name (which by todays standards is true but at the time of his life normal <yikes>) is not equivalent to taking the piss out of thousands of deaths. You may be on a hit list for the former though <ok>

Dave, Britain controlled Ireland's import/exports because at the time Ireland was under British rule and was annexed.

This doesn't seem to be going in a very good direction.
Ironic- given the subject of the thread.

Would sisu tell me I didn't know my own history and taunt me about colonialism in an alehouse over a pint? Works both ways mate. I said straight away I meant nothing by it when mito brought it up.

I love Ireland and guess where my heritage is ffs?

Page, there is some very good stuff published by Trinity College on the subject. The economic control of the Irish agricultural markets was in the hands of Irish merchants. As far as the evidence that they produced there was no political control from London.

Muhammad married a 9 year old as part of his polygamist harem, a fact according to their scripture.

    Fatwa on its way
