Exactly so. In a truly meritocratic society, there might be a case for allowing the most talented and hard working to flourish at the expense of the rest of us. However, we don't live in a society like that; we live in a society where almost the entire govt, plus 75% of journalists, lawyers, judges, and CEOs went to public school.

It's not easy to get the balance of regulation right. But that's not a reason not to try. Otherwise the only freedom you're protecting is the freedom of the strong to exploit the weak.

We've replaced aristocracy with entrepreneurs - 80% of the rich list are now self made http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22188762

Not that that has improved equality - it's just replaced an upper class of people who were lucky to be born into money to an upper class of people who have the attributes to make money (whether through luck, hard work... or crony capitalism). I don't know what the fix is though - I spent 4 years away from my family commuting between islands because I cared about career. My sister stayed closer to home because she cared about having a close knit family. We both got what we wanted, but we ended up unequal in wealth because of our different choices in life - how do we fix the wild variance in potential outcomes without affecting our free choices to pursue individual goals?

100% tax on any wages above £200k say? Watch all the Premier League players and JK Rowlings and entrepreneurs like Dyson leave - and calculate if it's worth it in the end (I dunno, it might be...).

Tesco were once very strong and now they are on the defensive because they had effective competition emerge. As long as we can create a society where individuals have many choices and the companies do not have monopolies then the strong are constantly paranoid about the weak taking their business elsewhere.

Incidentally, he's exactly the sort of person Pinker was talking about in that quote from earlier.

In China the best jobs are civil cervant employees as women for example retire at 50 and get 90% of their salary each year without contribution.
The catch is you are expected to do national military service to get these jobs or have family in the sector .
People that don't work for the government get about 30% of their salary as a pension and have to pay each month towards it whist working.
Nearly all my Mrs family work for National grid her grandfather used to as well and all the males have done at least 3 years in the Military.
Even her cousin a young 26 year old sparky has a nice car and bought his own nice appartment , I would estimate 99% of the jobs at his company go to Chinese people and they earn a good wage.
All of their services transport water electric etc are Chinese owned companies.
Compare that with the UK where most transport electric gas companies are all foreign companies with migrant workers and it becomes clear why the PRC is doing well and it's citizens have a better and better standard of living.

Just my observation since being here but they are on to a winning formular.

    1) Have we? Seems to me that a handful of Russian Oligarchs now rival the Duke Of Westminster, having plundered their country's natural resources and sunk their money into Central London property. Is that progress?

    2) Preventing monopolies is a good example of benign regulation of markets. It's what the Monopolies and Mergers Commission was designed to do, but a culture of "light touch" regulation throughout the world led to the collapse of the world's banking system 7 years ago. Governments should be looking at co-operating around the globe to ensure that bandit bankers don't bankrupt us all again, but I fear it's already happening. The world is awash with cheap credit, massive bubbles are being inflated, and the bankers controlling the flow of money are still snout deep round the ****ing trough, while right wing govts throughout Europe look on and applaud.

We seriously need to bring to justice the spivs and chancers who turned the City of London, for example, into a ****ing casino and robbed us all blind. Get a few of those crooked ****s in prison.

HBOS and RBS? When your lot break up the UK through their dirty power-sharing deal with Haddock, perhaps they will arrange for a repayment of these debts from the new scotch government. Yeah right, Balls is only interested in fiddling his expenses to get his mortgages paid off. Allegedly.
