I think that the gap between the two sides will continue for a long while. Saints seem to epitomise how a modern team should function with a strong, team ethic and a conveyor-like youth academy. For their part, I feel Portsmouth have been brave in becoming a community club yet those in charge seemed to have struggled to achieve any stability let alone see the club return to the kind of position it should merit. I can't see any improvement this season and the longer you stay in this league, the harder it will be to escape. If I am correct, Portsmouth's last stay in the old division 4 was a coupe of seasons. I can see Portsmouth lingering in the new Division 2 for a long while, I'm afraid. Had the proposed academy been built in Titchfield and the money not squandered on players they could not afford, I wonder whether proper investment would have arrested their fall and sown the seeds for a recovery. Had the Pompey youth system produced players that other clubs coveted, they should not have found themselves in their current situation.

Also, if we weren't terrible at appointing managers:

3 awful appointments in a row. No team could thrive with that record,.

not to mention previous attempts at getting new owners, the Scummers were so very lucky that old Big Nose's consortium with that mummy's boy Fialka failed and the fat German was waiting in the wings. I remember the Scummers being really jealous of the fact we had purportedly a new billionaire owner in that fake sheik as well as others. Still hey ho I shall keep the faith and my blood will always flow blue.<ok>

In the end we ended up with the fake and Southampton got the good guy. That's life I suppose.

Happy new year to one and all.

    Neil Warnock is available....

    Just saying!

As is Adkins. I think he'd be more realistic. Plus, he'd be highly motivated to succede so he could stick two fingers up at Southampton

Adkins still loves Southampton fc and its fans PL but all that aside, if you could get one of those managers then promotion would be a formality.

If that was his motivation, he could have done that at Reading, surely?

Adkins was and is a glorified physiotherapist NOT a man manager that is needed at Pompey.

As a City man and as such a man manager, I am putting myself forward for the job............<whistle> I ask only one thing wear the shirt with pride and kick every one of the opposition off the park when the ref is not looking.

Forwards stand on the goalies toes at corners so he can not jump for the ball. Whatever it takes, to get the points.........<whistle>

Yeah but Reading are just another team
Reading are just another club, Portsmouth are Southampton's rivals.... it would be a far bigger pair of fingers

I think Pompeys place as rivals has gone Pl, with Bournemouth knocking on the prem door and many other South clubs higher up the league ladder, your ony rivalry is at youth level.
As for your type of manager sb3 or should that read sb4 now? Singingblue 4th division
Then you won't achieve sod all.

Lambayama it was a good point at the Hatters and glad they proved me wrong - consistency is desperately needed so if we pull off any kind of result at Newport then I'll be most chuffed. Ian T observes what many of us feel and Dev makes a very good point re the squad.. We have a lot of the players out of contract in the summer and I'd be far happier with no more than 26 players in the squad that were of better quality. As for the thread it's become an across the divide interaction point and for the record although it pains me to say it the stripes are surprising everybody with a very solid campaign - I originally thought lower mid-table before a ball was kicked - now I think top 6 is a very distinct possibility.Ouch that hurts.

Maybe I'm just a softee but I don't hate any football teams there are so many other things in this world to 'hate' several spring to mind - I must admit there are sides that I smile when they are beaten - when you see football hooligans belting each other into next week if they could show as much energy into negating so many wrongs that are in this world their energy would be far better spent. This of course is fanciful as it will never change Portsmouth Southampton dislike/contempt/hatred is something that is handed down from fathers to sons although I would like to think hatred is too strong a word - so we move on - :emoticon-0103-cool:

Oh man why so bitter SB3?.......would you not be crowing a bit....(or a lot)......if the tables were reversed? Over the years you have thrown every Insult at us that you can think of. Sad really one would have thought you would have learned by now that only in your dreams will you get the better of the saints fans. Just as you think your blood is a Blue colour we prefer to be more natural a colour. Still carry on dreaming.......

Honest question here, chaps. How long do you think you can stay in L2 and maintain the crowd levels? I would have thought if you don't go up this season or next, they'll start dropping off badly.
