With us being a London club and given Harry's past connections with Defoe, if we can't land this one, we've no hope of signing anyone. And on transfers in general - it's the 3rd January already, surely we've been lining up players over the last month or so. We're that desperate for another striker, we can't afford to wait until midnight on jan 31st to start signing players. I know Tony's got other things on his plate but someone tell Phil Beard to pull his sodding finger out!

It's another of those funny things where a number on here don't want the man as if it's their own money they'd be spending on him, then there'll be outrage because we'll lose out to a relegation rival. Proven goalscorers like Defoe don't become available that often and we'd be foolish not to do everything possible to get him to our club.

I think it's more about us only wanting loans. It's good that we have a transfer policy at the moment and are sticking to it. Surely you don't want us to ignore the policy and blow a load of cash we don't have on a player who may or may not help keep us up?

Can't agree. Defoe is about a proven a Premier League striker as there is available. Harry knows him inside out too. And if we were to go down, I'd back him to score a hatful in the Championship to get us back up so he's a sound investment. It's a no-brainer. And if we let him go to a relegation rival, serious questions will need to be asked

Both great points, and I am sure a list was drawn up, but the whole transfer market is a moving feast of players being made available based on clubs needs (transfers and recent injuries) in a global market.

Must be extremely tough to stick to a transfer strategy and a budget, while the financial pressures of staying up are huge.

Must be a nightmare for all the EPL bottom 8 or so clubs to get that balance right. Mind you exactly the same for the top 8 all trying to get into europe competitions.

Six million is nothing if we stay up, but a lot of dough if we don't. As Simon said, he would score a hatful and get us up again.
The worst scenario would be that he goes to Leicester scores the goals that keep them up and at our expense.
Taking everything into consideration, we really should bite the bullet and cough up the money.

    Although this might change things:

Letting Defoe go to a relegation rival would be like Chelsea letting Lampard go to Man City. Potentially very costly

I understand your point but we've been here before. A player of that ilk will be on high wages and we'll be in big trouble if we go down with him. Also, what makes you think he will stay with us if we go down? Won't he either go out on loan to a top level club or leave outright?

Well if we go down and he doesn't stay with us, we'd no doubt get most of our money back. I can't see another proven PL striker out there who's available on loan. There's also plenty of dead wood in our squad we could flog to recoup some of the money.

Totally agree Phil Bread should have full authority to sanction any transfer business.

We should spend whatever it takes to stop defoe going to a relegation rival.

Thought he's been injured more than not the last year? If so no thanks.

So the Defoe saga finally rolls to a complete stop as far as QPR is concerned. 3 year contract at Sunderland after which he will be retiring or going back to the MLS for one last hurrah. I am going to miss all those Thursday Defoe rumours!!
There is a distinct lack of activity at HQ and it is getting hard not be somewhat discouraged by this.
I can only hope for something to cheer about on Saturday though....?
