Nothing wrong with a good agent. Most players and artists need to concentrate on their job...they don't want to be too occupied with details. Obviously a footballer may have a club preference, but his agent then gets the best deal and sorts out all the boring legal stuff.

De Jong failed to score a single goal last season for Newcastle, despite playing, what, 10 - 15 games for them after signing on loan in January. So seeing his name banded about hardly excites me. At the same time though, it's generally wrong to judge someone on just four months.

A legal representative can do that. I know this isn't black or white, but if I had to go one side of the fence or the other, I would go the other side to the agents. Too many of them are bad for the game.

I would be gutted to loose Corky for the sake a few few quid.
If he doesn't sign he will walk for free in the summer and then we will have to pay a transfer fee and probably higher wages than we are offering him now for his replacement who may or may not be as good as him

I don't want to lose him as I really like him. I do feel though that if we don't really put up too much of a fight, that maybe Clasie is on his way come the summer.

Clasie's likely the replacement for Schneiderlin, and though Reid appears to have a bright future there's still a need for another central mid there; otherwise we're a short journey away from re-purposing attacking mids and central defenders, as we have on a couple occasions this year. May have lost the opportunity to get Cork back at a reasonable price over the summer, unfortunately; wonder if he's still uncertain that he's favoured for a role here.

Except that that is rubbish. We will have an idea of what wages we think he is worth and if he doesn't want them they are freed up for someone else.
And given they way our club does business and the players we target there is a good chance we would be offering similar wages for a replacement and not higher ones. We would only offer higher wages if we felt the replacement was better.

And the "few quid" you speak of is likely to be at least £1.5m (10k a week disparity over 3 years). I know this is football and there is loads of TV money etc, but that is not a "few quid"

Would we actually use Stephens/Gape, or would we just play a more veteran option out of position again? Cork has eleven appearances, five of those starts prior to going down; by my count, in the league we have 13 goals scored and zero conceded when he's on the pitch. He adds something, as evidenced by the fact that he was getting starts over Wanyama...I prefer Victor myself, but he's an option that we'd do well to keep around.

I would like to keep Cork as well. But can understand if he wants regular first team football.

Same, but I'd be disappointed if we couldn't convince him that he can get regular first-team football here. He was getting starts prior to his injury, and I can easily see him getting the same amount of playing time here next season as he would with one of the clubs chasing him.

A poster on the Echo site said that he had heard that the problem with Jack Cork is the damage to his ankles which may force him to retire if they aren't sorted.

If we qualify for Europe next season we will need a bigger squad than we have now so loosing a good quality squad player who would not let us down in any competition is important.
As we have seen this season, the squad is vital not the first team
