Can't add anything to that except that he gave us Istanbul and the platform to re-establish ourselves; and a line stretching from Moores and Krusty onwards have palpably failed both he and the fans to do so since that night.
Gerrard as been great for us but I feel it is the right time. We all can see the team works better with out him now but Rodgers is struggling to accept it. I now suspect Rodgers has been trying to give Gerrard as many games he can before he leaves as a tribute.
Delighted with news but I dearly hope you lot can pay proper tribute, everyone will be gushing for next 6 months frankly
I think his game time will now drop tbh, Rodgers no longer needs to convince him to stay and also he will be looking ahead at next season. I hope and expect gerrard to be a super sub, and not a starter from now on.
Gerrard is a legend and credit to this club and the city of Liverpool. In his prime, he was the most the complete midfielder I had seen and was one of the best (if not the best) players in world football. He led by example, through moments of inspiration and quality. Some of the goals he scored were remarkable - not just in technique but the situation they occurred in (I.e Istanbul, FA cup final, Olympiakos). This is a sad day for any LFC fan but its the right decision and I believe the club can now move forward positively. It will be interesting to see how Rodgers uses him now. Personally, I hope he uses him for the last 20 mins of the game ala Lampard. Let him bow out on a high, not simply play him for 90 mins to the teams detriment. Do the right things Rodgers
Who's going to take our penalties I wonder? Sturridge is awful at them. Lambert wont start enough matches and Balotelli will probably leave.
If Gerrard had been happy sitting on the bench and coming on for 15-20 minutes every other match or when the situation required it, and if Rodgers had not wanted to start him and have him on the pitch as much as possible, even bringing him back in at the expense of and disrupting a side that had given possibly our best performance of the year, then it might have worked. As it is Gerrard clearly wants to start as many games as possible not be super-sub. Rodgers is starting him when his form wouldn't gift him a starting place if he wasn't Gerrard, so he's better going somewhere else because at Anfield this way of using him will only hold the team back. In the games he has left for Liverpool he should be given 15-20 minutes towards the end of our games and the very occasional start, like Lampard at City as has been said. This will save his reputation from getting any more of a battering from fans, allow fans to appreciate him for what he has been and what he still is (give him the ovations when he comes on/off), and hopefully generally work in the team's favour by playing to the strengths he still has, his passing range and accuracy, dead ball / free kick / pen skills and the aura around him (which will be even more intense now that everyone knows it's his last 5/6 months in red).
Shaqiri? I reckon the club will be desperate for a marquee after loosing both Gerrard ad Suarez within two years.
Maybe Sturridge has been on an intensive penalty taking course for the last 6 months and this injury stuff is all a smokescreen #conspiracy
Couldnt agree more but what is a worry is how we haven't brought any player even half as good through the youth system since Gerrard. Most of our youth team have been bought in at 16. Only really Flanagan has come close and we still haven't seen much from Rossiter.
That could all change - the academy is looking extremely healthy at the moment. I know Sterling was bought from QPR but we bought him when he was 14 - can we class him as an academy graduate? In terms of local talent, I agree but that is the way of the game now. We need to find the best talents and bring them to LFC regardless of background.
