So the news is out. Some of us saw it coming, others are surprised. Gerrard will leave us at the end of the season. Not only are we loosing a true legend, we are also loosing a great captain. gerrard has been Captain of this football club for over a decade. He has lifted the European Cup, The FA Cup and on two occasions the League Cup. His boots will be hard to fill. But I do believe they can be filled and filled well. I do not feel the captaincy has to go to the biggest star in the team. Being captain requires a certain character. A character many stars dont have. From now until July we have a 6 month race to the LFC captaincy. The current leader in the race is vice Captain Jordan Henderson, who has lead well when called upon. Another contender mentioned is Sakho who captained PSG at just 17 years of age. But language problems may dent this. Lallana was a strong and confident captain for Southampton. Lets take some early guesses on who will win the race.
I would like Lucas in place as captain, some may disagree here as they are not big fans of him, imo he's a player that loves the club and always gives his all, he's at that right age and has the experience. So unless someone is brought in he's the easy choice for me.
A few years ago I would have agreed but I have concerns about his fitness. Can he manage 90 minutes for around at least 30 league games a season with European games happening mid week?
I think he's over the injury this season but has unfortunately been benched by Rodgers, let him play and he'll soon be back to his best imo. Playing him has been forced on Rodgers to some degree but it has had the right result. Henderson is too young and not ready to captain Liverpool.
I do like Lucas and hope he sticks around. I'd like to see Rodgers trial a few captains ahead of next season. Henderson, Lucas, Lallana, Sakho, Skrtel, Sturridge.
Henderson - Too young Lucas - My Choice Lallana - Been here 5 mins Sakho - Still has a lot to prove before he is considered Skrtel - Not a very good player imo Sturridge - Injury prone but an interesting choice. If he could stay fit maybe as he's really shown a love for the club and really seems to enyoy playing for us.
Sturridge seems popular socially among both the Liverpool and England players to. Does it really matters that Lallana is new if he's a strong captain?
Considering Henderson is vice captain, I am pretty sure it will be his. Captained England at various levels, gets all around the pitch, gets my choice.
Hendo will be captain. Lucas - no way, he serves a very basic and functional purpose and I hope we will replace him tbh - also there are many games where he is simply not required because he is just too defensive and can's assist or shoot to save his life.
We're not really blessed with a lot of candidates. Henderson is quite Young but seems the natural choice (only choice). Sakho would be my choice but not sure Rodgers fancies him and there could be questions over his communication skills atm. Would not pick Lallana - he's a player who will be rotated frequently and he doesn't command respect. Skrtel is a selfish player and he cannot lead a defence let alone an entire team, so captaincy is definitely not for him. Toure would be a good shout but again, he wont be playing most matches and will be gone next season. Lucas is an interesting choice - professional and gives 100%. Unfortunately, that's not enough. I don't see anything from Lucas that would inspire me. Plus I think he'll be gone in the summer.
This is a bit pointless surely? People do realise that Henderson is the vice captain and when Gerrard doesn't play he is therefore captain....
Henderson, put him and leave him right of center mid and make him captain permanently. A captain should work as hard as henderson does. He's the right sort too, not a major hothead but not a mouse either.
I believe Gerrard was never vice captain. If his contract was not up I'd be putting my estimate on Glen Johnson. Rodgers loves Glen Johnson.
Well I can see a situation like happened my local team I play for. 2 years ago we were going through a rough patch , manager ****ed off and infighting. One Sunday was the coin toss and the Ref called captains , no one from our side went forward and there was groans of who wants to captain this **** team. . It may not be as dramatic at Anfield but I'd put money on a few players declining the opportunity if offered.
