If Sakho can learn English before next July , he'd be my captain. He captained PSG at 17 ffs. Some of his shaky displays are definitely down to the language barrier.

If he overcomes that and there is no excuse ffs hes here 18months now , it'll help him settle off the field and in turn help him on it.

    I wasn't talking about Can :p
It could go either way tbf. With Gerrard going, he HAS to look around and think whether the club are going in the right direction. Could he look at Gerrard and think 'well this guy sacrificed personal glory for the club, do I want to do the same with the risk of achieving less than he did...no CL trophy etc'. Compound that with who actually comes in for him and what they can offer (success wise and money). The only plus point which I think swings it slightly towards staying is the fact that he plays every game and therefore has no complaints in that sense.

It really is an end of an era.

Fowler was my young years, Gerrard and Carra growing up and early adult years.

Time for the team to step up.

Anyone feeling that Rodgers was putting him in to try and convince him to stay where as in reality knew he wasn't the best option?

But if he wasn't going this year, he would the next. He's 35... it's not like we're selling a WC player in his prime (that was last year <whistle>)

No, I think Rodgers is just starstruck. If he was doing what you suggest he should be sacked for undermining the good of the team.

Yeah. Tbf Carra helped things when he came back in, where as Gerrard's role is less certain.

Wouldn't he have been better off pointing to legends at other clubs towards the end of their careers and telling him why he needs to be used selectively to preserve his playing years at the club? Lets not forget Gerrard only just retured from international football in the summer. That must have been done to prolong his career at Liverpool surely so Gerrard would have understood the reasoning for reducing game time not increasing it.

This doesn't look great on Rodgers tbh.

As Treble mentions he stepped down from England to prolong his club career - but you would have thought that was at Liverpool.

I suspect it was a numbers of things that has culminated in this decision - the fact that we aren't challenging and are unlikely to next year may have a affect - a couple of years in the sun for him on good money instead.

I do wonder if he's lost faith in Rodgers. I certainly wouldn't be playing Gerrard so much as Rodgers has been and leaving him open to criticism - or maybe Gerrard feels his performances haven't been to his high standard and feels his time has come.

Either way it doesn't look great, and its **** news.

Hard man to replace, not only because he's a living breathing bit of history, but because a leader is precisely what Liverpool lack at the moment!

There's no leader in defence, the midfield is a bit of a mess at times, and quite honestly if Rodgers gave Mario the captaincy I'd be absolutely certain he's gone mental <laugh>

Gerrard has produced some of the defining performances and moments of Liverpool FC, but quite honestly myself and other neutrals have been awed by them the world over as well. That West Ham goal, ridiculous, that second half vs AC Milan, out of this world. He's torn my team to shreds a few times, and he's been a fantastic role-model up and down the country. It'll be a sad day for football when he retires, but for now it's a sad day for the premier league to hear we're losing a legend <ok>

Henderson just about the best candidate, but it's really slim pickings. If Suarez was still there, I'd have said it'd be his all day long.

One of the greatest players in the club's history. End of. At. Times he dragged the club to victory on his own.

This season, he was not the same but that is not his fault. Time waits for no man, great or small. It was all down to one man. Rodgers. The biggest single question he had to answer this season. And he flunked it.

Look at How ferguson managed Giggs and Scholes. Not as key players but as bit players who made their dwindling contributions as the years passed. EVEN then many people felt the mancs midfield went into terrible decline because they had been around for a couple of years too long.

Gerrard is a true legend of our club and the premiership. He has done more for our club in his career than most of our legendary players. He will be remembered as one of the best players of the premiership era.

Thank you Steve Gerrard for all that you have done for and at LFC. You have gone beyond being a hero and become an Icon along with Elisha Scott, Billy Liddell, and Kenny. People will speculate about why the decision is being made public now. I would like to think that Gerrard took the final decision today in the interests of both himself, his family and LFC.

I'd be happy for him to go to the US. He deserves a nice cushy retirement.

But not via City though. Even if pellegrini is not an idiot like Rodgers and play him full matches. He will manage him like lampard.

Not entirely true. You're correct we lack leaders, but we lack leaders who organise. Gerrard wouldn't have been half the captain without JC by his side. Gerrard may have taken the plaudits but JC was probably the true leader of the team. They complimented each other so well but JC was a do as I say leader where a Gerrard more a do as I do.

What we are lacking is organisers more so than leaders. Gerrard never has or will be an organiser.

However, don't want to turn this into slagging Gerrard off because he's the greatest I've seen in my lifetime and far and away my greatet ever PL player.

Regardless of the reason's there is no doubting Steve Gerrard has been a truly world class player throughout his career...the phrase gets over used but he could have played for any club in the world. His one club loyalty puts him up there with Maldini....first name on the team sheet for club and country for years and unquestionably a legend. He'll be missed by any true football fan.

  18. I will be gutted to see him go but it is for the best for both parties IMO

Interesting to see where he goes since its said he won't join another English club. Hope he doesn't go the the states!

He has been fantastic for us but it is certainly time to move on. Rodgers is doing a cracking job of ruining the memories we have of him, there are people on here laying into him and even the occasional name call. Is that the way we should be treating a player who's done so much for us?

Good luck from me wherever he goes.

The situation over Gerrard's future has become awkward and Liverpool hope that by announcing his departure it will enable the club to focus on the rest of the season without it hanging over them.(Independent)
