Steven Gerrard: Liverpool captain to leave at the end of season Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season. Gerrard, 34, became free to sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club on Thursday. The former England captain, who retired from international football in July, will not move to another English club, BBC Sport understands. Gerrard was offered a new Liverpool deal in November and is believed to be interesting clubs in the US. LA Galaxy are thought to be among the possible destinations for the midfielder. His former Liverpool and England team-mate Jamie Carragher tweeted: "Sad day for Liverpool and English football with the Gerrard news." But Carragher, who retired in 2013, added: "I think it's the right decision, all things considered."
Whats true ? La Galaxy or he slows us down big time ? The guy is and always will be a legend but its time to go, I wont be shedding any tears. He gave us some wonderful memories but theyre being lost in a sea of mediocrity.
Must admit this wasn't the 'Leaving announcement' I was hoping for. Was really hoping for 'Glen Johnson to be run out of Liverpool'
The following: 1. He's slowing us down and we're better playing around him when he's in the team, only positives of him playing are his set pieces 2. He'll go to LA 3. It's just time to go
Whilst I get the joke, there is a worry that we don't have any real leaders in the team or squad. Sakho and Lallana are the only ones who have been Cpt before but with Sakho struggles to settle wouldn't want to give it to him and Lallana, not for me. Hendo isn't a leader Skrtel, Christ no, in fact I'd hope he'd be out by next season. Toure, NOPE Sturridge, Sterling yep now I'm just stretching.
Let's hope if it is true, we go all out to win a cup and let him lift it at Wembley (or the EL) one last time as LFC captain. I'd rather we finished outside top 4 and won the LC, FAC or EL this year just so Gerrard can go out on a high
Henderson has captained England at youth levels and Under 21's before he moved to seniors. A year as VC under Gerrard before taking the role full time? Captain's aren't all that important anyway. What we need are leaders in the defence like we had with Carragher and Hyypia. You don't need a CM to be a leader, it helps but you need someone to organise and lead from CB in my opinion.
Wonder what affect this news will have on Sterling and Sturridge staying? Carragher, then Suarez, and now Gerrard. Beginning of the end?
Don't think it will have an effect on Sterling or Sturridge. Still think Sterling would be a fool to leave. I think actually it may make things easier for the team - they have to take responsibility for the team's display now, not look at Gerrard to bale them out.
End of an Era. Aside from that I dont know what to say. No one is bigger than the club, but Stevie G is as much part of the club as we can ever hope for. Just wish him all the best in whatever he does and hope we see him at Anfield again in some capacity.
Hate shody reporting like this... Steven Gerrard's passing accuracy in the Premier League (86%) over the past 18 months has been better than at any other stage of his career. His 13 assists last season was also a career high, while his 13 goals was only bettered by his 16-goal haul in 2008-09. 1. His passing accuracy is better because he's playing deeper so instead of trying risky through balls in the final 3rd like he did when he was younger and played further forward, he's playing simpler passes from deep. 2. How many of those assists were from set pieces and how many of the rest were "proper" assists. Not a simple 5 yard pass sidewards for someone else to smash in. 3. Same point as above, how many were from set pieces? Didn't he score about 7 penalties?
