A home banker if there ever was one. Let's be honest and say if we do not beat the worst side in the league at home then we are in serious trouble. 2-0 or more to us.
Brendan Rodgers confirmed ahead of the New Year's Day contest that the talismanic No.8 will be restored from the start for the assignment against the Foxes. "Steven will come straight back in," said the Northern Irishman. "He's a wonderful player and servant to this football club, and he's been brilliant for me in my time here. "I've just got to manage his games. When I came here two-and-a-half years ago, everyone talked about whether he could play in my type of football. He was arguably the player of the year last year. "I'm just managing his game time and he understands my situation of picking the team and making it fresh as often as we possibly can. He missed out the other night but he'll play."
Rodgers confirmed Gerrard will start today... Have to feel a bit shut if you're one of the players that gets dropped for him after the last performance.
Oh for **** sake. Grow some bollocks Brendan, this is getting absurd. Such a little pussy when it comes to Gerrard and Johnson, it's incredibly frustrating. Here comes another 90 minutes of Gerrard doing absolutely nothing productive and giving away lots of simple passes. Yay.
Putting the word "arguably" doesn't make a correct statement as there is no argument on who our best player last year was
Like I told you in a previous thread. Not a scapegoat, he is just yet to be useful in any way. Hope he proves me wrong today, but we all know he won't. If the team is exactly the same line up as VS Swansea, minus Manquillo I imagine to make space for Gerrard, then we won't have the mobility and intensity in midfield, or the strength in defence and attack down the right that we had in that game. But yeah, of course it's scapegoating, he couldn't possibly not actually be any good anymore. Move on
And like I said to you in said thread, he's not been good enough but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be appreciated (or just not heavily criticised) when he doesn't do anything wrong either. Beating him with a stick no matter if we win, lose or draw whether he plays well, average or poor is scapegoating and that's exactly what happens on these boards. Same for Johnson although I can't remember the last time he played well
Fair play. He's just a disruption to the team at the moment, and it infuriates me to see him waltz straight back in. I can't even be mad at him really (although his obvious lack of effort is annoying), it's more frustration with Rodgers. He thinks he's putting on a man management masterclass by 'resting' SG and then going to the effort of coming out with that spiel that Flappy posted, when really all he is doing is being a scared little weasel and pandering to his landlord. Like I said, I really do hope he turns this around and goes back to being the SG that played with heart and passion, but I just can't see it happening.
Frustration at Brod for it I understand since its the managers decision. Just irritates me when I see players getting unfair abuse. Brod shouldn't be playing him every game but if Stevie does play then judge the player on his performance, not the team's since that is Brod's department. Yes, players are part of that team but its up to the manager to put the best possible team on the field so if he regularly puts a player (Gerrard) in that team its only him to blame.
I just hope someone comes in for him with big money this window and Gerrard fancies the change. It's the best for both sides now. The last two matches have shown that the way forward for this team is using the younger players and letting them settle into a certain way of playing. Add Sturridge or another decent mobile striker to that plus one or two more signings that we all know we need and we can challenge for the title. Not this season, top 4 could be on this year if we stick with what was bringing positives, but next. We could let Gerrard stay and have him as the Giggs/Lampard style player of the team making cameos and saving his energy for certain points, but I honestly don't think we're set up to be able to do that with him.
Mate, Gerrard has had a poor season so far, he's been mediocre to terrible in most games with a couple of high points, the CL free kick for example. I think you're being a bit blinkered tbh and can't get past seeing him as a club legend. I don't think the abuse he's getting above is unfair at all, he's gone missing at times and when he does look interested influences the side to play in a counter-productive way to what fits their abilities. I take your point about it being the managers responsibility ultimately for picking him though.
I think the only reason people are frustrated is because of how we performed against Swansea without him. Arguably the best we've played this season in terms of movement, pressure, keeping the ball and you'd hope that we'd stick with that team that did so well and let them show us it wasn't a 1 off.
Exactly, this season change has been our biggest opponent/enemy. Just keep that same team from the Swans game, they played the best I've seen all season and deserve the chance to do it again. If it goes tits up fair enough you can say maybe it was a flukey game or whatever and you look at the options but if we hammered the foxes 4-0, bearing in mind they're bottom of the table and Swans are where they are, you still have to say it's your best side.
Off the top of your head, which games (or rather how many) has Steven played well in? I don't mean blended in to an overall team performances where you didn't notice he was playing, I mean which ones can you look back at and say, "oh yeah, Stevie had a great game and influenced/controlled the midfield". Gerrard will get the same backing he always does, the fans will cheer his name as always, but most on here simply aren't afraid to predict another poor performance from him - and predicting a poor performance isn't the same as not supporting either. I don't think Rodgers gets enough criticism (from sources outside of this board, obviously) for his poor management of him. I think the criticism Gerrard gets on his performances is warranted - but again, not enough from sources outside of this board. What do you think our team will be like with our captain reinstated?
