For those that remember those heady days of Keegan and Hall and the excitement of promotion and then bulldozing all before us in the PL (for a time at least) and the way the team was almost everybody's second team, the way the cash poured in propelling NUFC into the upper echelons of the top earning clubs in Europe, the way that the Toon Army swelled to epic proportions and the way that the profile of the club was massively risen and the extending of the ground............... do you ever ask yourself why nobody is seriously looking at NUFC? Anybody that cares to look at recent history would see that a successful Newcastle United would match ANY club in the PL for support, and most clubs in Europe too. Are Spurs seriously in the billion pound bracket just because they occupy a ****ty corner of London?

That very question has been doing my head in too.
I honestly don't think some of the fans help either as some prospective owners may look at the way Ashley gets treat and think 'christ I don't want to get involved with that mob'.

Surely they must also look at the way we hero worship the likes of Keegan, Sir Bobby and Shearer and think, 'hmmm bring a bit of success to the place and that could easily be me'

£250 million would buy the club I would imagine, now Ashley has had a good chunk of cash out of it. Stadium is there. Fans are there. Academy is there. Desire of the whole region is there. Light the blue touch paper and........................!!!

I think that was quite early on in his ownership though. I suspect he would take less now. He has had profit out of it. He will be looking for his initial outlay to be returned to him now.

The problem is that it wasn't as rosy as that back then. We still had protests and talk of boycotts. Keegan has said he received a lot of hate mail when he sold Andy Cole, There was a small minority (of mainly younger fans who didnt realise how far above our weight we were punching in the 90s) who did boo Sir Bobby and wanted him gone (It was a very small minority, but it was there).

There is also the issue of who would buy us. For every Abramovich or City Sheikh there are dozens of Vincent Tans, Venky's and Peter Ridsdales. You have to be very careful what you wish for.

The 90s were great - especially compared to the utter **** we put up with in the 70s and 80s - but they also nearly destroyed the club. We were not run sustainably, and we were hemorrhaging money. If Fat Freddie had stayed in charge then it is not an exaggeration to say we would have stood a very good chance of being in the same boat as Leeds or Portsmouth. The club spent millions on status symbols like Owen instead of proper investment in training facilities, youth and development. Fat Freddie also didn't exactly do badly out of the club. The club might have lost millions but he didn't!

Ashley is a frustrating owner - especially with his lack of communication about his plans for the club, but in his defence at least we still have a club. The days of us throwing silly money around have gone. Even if we struck gold and got a genuine owner who had billions to spend then Financial Fair Play limits what they can now do. Our club has been run far worse than this in the past - not just Shepherd, but the likes of Lord Westwood too. The 90s were the exception. For the most part, this is what Newcastle United has always been - if anything we're better now than we were in much of our history.

Be very careful what you wish for.

English Owner, English Manager, a few local talents coming through the ranks now, financially healthy, 9th in the Premier League and somebody comes up with SackPardew.com.

The very real chance of Newcastle United changing-hands in the near future has to be considered and the way Mike Ashley's pursuit of Rangers is gathering pace, can only confirm that thought.

He does own the stadium and all the fittings that go with it
he just doesn't own the land that the stadium sits on it, (leasehold not freehold)
Don't know how long the leasehold is though

It's a good question however in general the only talk about other clubs being bought are just paper talk.
The new fair play control now makes it hard for a rich owner to come in and just steam roller any club.

Just imagine getting our club back

They'd be cutting their own throats if they did that. It'll never happen.

Financial fair play as you point out has screwed the future for most smaller clubs as they can't spend to achieve the dream anymore, Platini has ****ed it up by polarising the game, instead of leveling the playing field he has left the bigger established clubs like Man U in prime position as they can spend much more money on players than the rest of the teams in the PL. Devil that he is Ashley has stabilised the clubs finances, actually achieved profit in a sector where debt seems to be the main aim, stood by a manager in very difficult circumstances which is rare and we can see a real potential return in the clubs youth policy along with young player recruitment, if you took the hatred for Asley and Pardew out of the equation there are actually quite a number of positives about the club, there just aren't the people out there wanting to invest in clubs at this time who have the money that Ashley does, may be plenty of Venkys though!!

There is another point to consider. I believe Ashley gave all his managerial backroom staff, Carver, Stone, Beardsley etc, 8 year contracts along with P45due meaning a lot of compo is due should a new owner come in and hopefully remove the useless so and so's. This will run into millions on top of any buyers fees.

Nobody knows what is going on behind the scenes. If Pardew does go, then something has changed somewhere. Genuinely believe that Ashley will sell the club in the next 2-3 years and take up full ownership of Rangers. Think we just need to be patient.

I have it on good authority that the Arabs are currently waiting for the 90% off sale to start.

The FFP rules state that ANY level of investment can be made in stadium building and infrastructure development (training ground etc) so if a club has enough fans then they will be able to compete. I won't hold my breath for Bournemouth though! :)
