Confidence is a major part of the game, so what would make the team the most confident: playing great and losing or playing defensively and getting a point against the league leaders. Pretty sure it is the latter. They are in that changing room high-fiving with renewed confidence in Ron's plans after 2 wins and a draw.
Yes, and we are Southampton. Since when did our expectations become so ridiculous? You've got to understand Koeman playing defensively after the schooling Man City gave us.
Thing is, whilst chelsea were banging on the door all game, we got the point and at the end of the day that is what matters. That game has passed and next game will be different.
You should have heard the amount of 'come ons' from my son and I every time one of our player sblcoked stuff.
Hear hear!! Brilliant play by the team today - Chelsea by far the best team to have come to St Marys this season and Hazard the best player. We did really well to hang on and the defending was magnificent. We took it to them as much as we could - but a point is a great result. I bet Jose Mourinho will be moaning though - even though Chelsea had the ref in their pocket. COYS!! Well done - great game even if I don't have any fingernails left!!
Southampton manager Ronald Koeman: "One point against Chelsea is worth three points against another opponent. I'm proud of the spirit and organisation. "I'm disappointed we conceded before half-time, at some moments we were lucky but you need that against these opponents. "We played with organisation until the last minute and the spirit we showed was unbelievable and we did not make stupid mistakes likes we did against City and United. "The second half was difficult, we fight until the last second and that was the key today. "We can be very happy with our position in the table, we play good football and the fans love the way we play. We had a difficult two weeks but the spirit is back, the confidence is back. "It's halfway and if we keep going like this we can fight for a good position."
Excellent performance against the best team in the league by some way Now for Arsenal who are not in the same league as today's opponents Well done to everyone....really proud
If we can go on and get three points the gunners which I think we are more than capable of then I will one happy guy. Also, seems like our friend the "amazing predictor" isn't around. I wonder if he got something wrong ?
Our apparently ultra-defensive team selection today was pretty damned similar to the side that was thrashing people earlier in the year, with the exception of the enforced changes at fullback. Playing Wanyama and Schneiderlin together =/= parking the bus...Chelsea is the variable that determined the style.
And he can moan long into the night. Shane Long nearly entered orbit last week but we got on with it. There were worse performances on the pitch from blue shirts than the ref.
Absolutely brilliant! The concentration the defence had to keep to stop out fabregas, hazard etc was immense! They are some of the trickiest, most agile players ive seen at St Mary! Special mention to Yoshida who has been a rock all year, he'll be missed when he leaves to go to the asia cup. Back to a 352 with Clyne & Betrand back in the team and I'm much more confident for the three points on New years day!
Brilliant point, brilliant defence performance. Just thankful that it wasn't all wasted due to a horror JWP back pass. Like Fonte vs Utd, what on earth was he thinking. Costa slipping got him out of jail. Now onto Arsenal. If we turn up again, I really think we could win that one. Bertrand back on the left. JWP back on set pieces (if only he was on the pitch in the first half today). Just a shame that they'll be no Clyne again.
