Those were the days. John McGrath, Brian O'Neil and Dennis Hollywood all in the same side.

Jimmy Case was tough, but nothing compared to some of those guys [Hollywood, O'Neil, Gabriel, McGrath etc. etc]

Thanks TheSecondStain, I'd probably forgotten him as he was almost on a par with Tommy Forecast?

I'd like to see John McGrath take on Diego Costa on Sunday. That would bring tears to someone's eyes, and it wouldn't be JMcG's. He was what led to Bill Shankly describing Saints as playing "ale house football", which was a bit harsh when you think of Paine and Channon and Davies etc., but not when you consider McGrath, Hollywood, Gabriel etc.

Generally we always had half-decent keepers. Within each pairing there were no real turkeys, starting at my era with Forsyth and Gurr right upto Niemi and Jones. If we had Forster and Boruc we'd have one the strongest pairings of all, although Niemi and Jones takes some beating. Anybody with Shilton was going to be pretty strong. I think Tim Flowers had an season early in career as reserve to Shilts. That must have been one heck of an education, training alongside arguably the best keeper in the World, at the time.

I remember Sandy Davie when he played for Dundee Utd - that ages me somewhat. Time for a nap, the party !

All the stats point to a low scoring game of 0-0 or 1-0 either way. Let's hope we can nick this; 2-0.

Please, Santa. Two early goals. I know Saints believe it to be near impossible to score in the first half...but it's really not.

We had Sunderland's long serving Jim Montgomery for several games, as emergency relief. He'd always been an excellent keeper for Sunderland, for example during the Leeds v Sunderland FA Cup Final, in 1973, when Leeds couldn't get past him, but he was an absolute stinker for Saints. From my info, he was homesick and went back north early.

Some people are like that. They shine in certain places, and not in others.

It's match day! Has it really been less than a week, since the last one?

    Come on you Reds!
