Arsène Wenger: Calum Chambers is too young to play so often for Arsenal

Arsène Wenger fears that Calum Chambers has “hit the wall,” having had too much responsibility forced on to his young shoulders during his fledgling Arsenal career.

“For a 19-year-old player, he has played too many games,” Wenger said. “They all hit the wall after 15, 17 games. You have to give them a breather, refresh and get them back again. At the moment, to have that responsibility in every single game is a lot on a player of that age.”

ORLY Arsene. Talk about saying the bleeding obvious. By the way Arsene, who put young Calum in this position in the first place? It was always a bad idea to put so much responsibility on a young player with little experience, especially when it's a big club like Arsenal. Not only that, he's covering two bloody spots in the team! Any normal coach would have eased him into the side, play maybe 5-10 games max and most of them as subs, learning from the seniors. After all, he is still very young and learning the trade. We've been fortunate that he's hit the ground running, but now Arsene is making excuses for a mistake he made in the transfer window.

I really don't want to lay into him, but the stuff he's saying lately is really annoying me. Stop making excuses and MAN UP! Concentrate on getting Arsenal back on track.

Can't excuse not buying a CB which put Chambers into this position, but on the other side of the argument Wenger couldn't have anticipated Debuchy and Kos being out for so long at the same time.

Agree with the second half of the statement but you also have to listen to Liverpool and Manchester United fans who are also moaning about the the inability of their managers to purchase a 'suitable' CB. Makes me wonder whether there are any decent ones available. I am sure a lot of you will be able to point me in the right direction (or more usefully point it out to Arsene...)

Easy to waste a load of money on a **** centre half. Liverpool played with three centre halves against Arsenal. Their £20million summer signing was deemed ****ter than Sakho, Toure and Skrtel by the manager who signed him.

Wasn't Kos's injury known about following the WC as it's a long-term condition? No excuses for his gross ineptitude. He's stitched up Chambers himself.

Wenger is such a tit. Anyone with any sort of sense could see this was coming because Chambers was asked to cover two positions because Wenger could not see the huge hole in our defence, I mean what kinda of 'top' manager goes into a season with 2 recognised CB's. Chambers was not even a CB when we signed him and he is just a kid at the end of the day. The pressure placed on him has been ridiculous and he is starting to burn out big time. Like Wilshere did, I hope the kid does not pick up a serious injury after Wenger has run him into the ground.

Before the transfer window closed, Wenger knew Kos was struggling with an Achilles problem and that is a sort of injury you just do not mess around with.

Also, Per returned late because of the World Cup, and therefore had no pre-season and has looked sluggish since. So basically we went into the season with a half-fit Mert, Kos struggling with his Achilles, and Chambers who was a right back being played in a new posistion. Is it any wonder why our title challenge is already over? With all these evidence, I find it staggering that there are still people who back Wenger.

I agree with this and Shteve's statement to an extent. But while Man U and Liverpool were looking for top defenders to be starters and improve **** defences, we had a defence that had kept the most clean sheets but was chronically short on numbers - so all we needed were a few squad players who could maybe play 2 positions.

Of course they still needed to be quality, but not top quality, so it should have been easier to buy at least one more defender

Exactly this. The man is inept. He promises so much and delivers so little. Another year of scraping Top4, sold to the fans as progress. Get him out.

I already said, I think it was inexcusable not getting another CB in, especially as we knew TV was going. Even if it was a loan deal or a 1-2 year contract for an older experienced back up CB. I can't fathom why Wenger did not address this area.
