But it's not as black and white as that, there are many aspects that make a good striker, other than scoring, such as assists, hold up play and the other things you mentioned. Your analogy would've been better if you'd used something like kickboxing and then said "well he can kick but he can't punch very well". If somebody like Van Persie managed, say, 6 goals in a season, would you consider him a **** striker? There is a massive difference between being able to score a goal and actually putting it away. The role that most of the strikers you often mention play wasn't necessarily that of an out and out goalscorer, more a foil for somebody else. As you rightly said, most goalscorers work better with a foil. Windass had Campbell, Burgess had Allsopp, King had Cousin, Jelavic had Long, even JVoH had Altidore. In all of those instances there was one player who put the goals in and another who was still a striker, but was told to do all the horrible stuff like making space and holding up the ball. It's not to say that the hold up striker can't bag a few himself, but generally they're used for a different purpose. Still strikers, just not goalscorers. And that's the way the modern game has come on, I'm afraid. JVoH and Altidore probably aren't the best example as they managed 4 goals between them all season.
JVoH was actully a handy player but misused here due to his height, all we did was ping high balls to him and he was chuffing useless in the air. I think if we'd have looked to use him more like how we use Jelly now with low balls in from the flanks he'd have done well.
Sorry I missed this post fella, You lot fly through the threads. I remember that. All the best to you and your good lady sir.
I respect everything Bruce has done for us but think its the end of the line for him now!... Hes got a great squad of players, but something isn't clicking for me, their possession is poor, GK is shocking! i dont think Bruce knows a good GK! i think he bought very well in Jan, but I believe the likes of pulis or laudrup would be getting better results!
In Bruce's defence he has seen his team decimated with injuries this season. We lost Snodgrass early and we can only guess what an influence in the side he might have been. Long was transferred and his replacement has had a difficult time 'bonding' with the team owing to his 'strike-partner' being injured leaving him out on his own up front which certainly does not suit his style of play. McGreggor, Chester and Diame have also been out at critical times. Hudd has been 'off the boil' in a few matches as well as Livermore. I stand corrected but I think it a rarity if we have fielded the same team twice. There has always been a vital cog missing from the team so consistency has been hard to achieve. I take heart from some of the football I have seen us play at times but we are sadly lacking the 'end result'. We could blame Bruce for this as his main signing, Hernandez, is not firing on all cylinders yet and for 10 million quid we may have expected better. We will drop into the relegation zone with some stiff matches coming up but we have shown in the past that we can rise to the occasion against better opposition. I am confident we will get it all together and settle in the 'third quarter' of the Premier League early next year.
Sorry - double post through drop-out during sending. If I just might add to the above I don't think any other Manager would get more out of our blokes than Steve.
There you go, identical stats... Steve Bruce, manager of Sunderland. Table, 30th November 2011: P13 W2 D5 L6 = 11 points. Sacked 30th November 2011.Then, 3 years on... Steve Bruce, manager of Hull City. Table, 30th November 2014: P13 W2 D5 L6 = 11 points. The heat is on. Hang on in there Steve! The fightback starts Wednesday at Everton - this will be their third game in six days.
'Next manager out' betting... http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/premier-league/next-manager-to-leave-post Safe for now I reckon. Another 9 points by the end of the year and survival is on schedule. Crunch time will be January if the slump continues but I expect a change of fortune by then.
Next manger to leave his post odds: Money on Steve Bruce, now 5/1 from 14/1. With an average of 1 win in every 8 games I guess people don't believe it can be improved to 1 in 3 matches for the remaining part of the season to get to the '10 wins to survive relegation theory.' http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/premier-league/next-manager-to-leave-post
Maybe Darren Bent could do a job for you lot. He was doing a good job for SAFC and Stevies daughter up our place. (Before he was sold by Pie Power)
Have you not been conditioned into accepting that you are "Only Hull" yet by Brucie? If not, it won't be long.
Got nowt against Hull City, decent club which has potential to be bigger than where you are. Unfortunately, you have what we had. 1: Assembled a good squad capable of mixing it with the big boys. 2: Dismantled the squad. It's took our club 3 years and 3 managers to recover from Bruce. We are only just starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel now, and we are not out of it by any stretch of the imagination yet.
We had, Darren Bent, Asamoah Gyan, Danny Welbeck (On loan), Steed Malbranque, Bolo Zenden, Jordan Henderson and Pie Power replaced them with Ji (Who), Connor Wickham (Was far to young at the time to have any impact), David Vaughan and Craig Gardner. The work of a very incompetent manager.
But a right ****. I do understand that it may not be a pleasant experience coming to the realisation that everything we told you would happen before it happened, is beginning to happen. I hope Brucie takes you to infinity and beyond. Sad ****.
"we told you" you've only just registered, I say sad ****, you say "a right ****". A right sad ****. A banned, multi registered sad ****
To infinity and beyond? He's not Buzz Lightyear you clown shoe. On a side note, don't you agree that your gaffer looks like early man?
