The Black Cats have secured empathic 3-0 victories in their last two trips to Tyneside, with Newcastle winning one of the last seven meetings between the two sides. Gus Poyet, who has a 100% record in the Tyne-Wear derby, will enter the game having seen no side outside the top six lose fewer matches during the current campaign. And the Black Catsâ recent results will also provide a platform to build from, with Poyetâs side losing just once since a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal back in October. The Uruguayan is also unbeaten against Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, winning his first match as Brighton & Hove Albion boss against Pardewâs Southampton before registering further wins in the FA Cup and the Barclays Premier League. Newcastle, meanwhile, will be looking for a reaction following back to back defeats, which has seen the Magpies ship eight goals in two games whilst subsequently exiting the Capital One Cup. Pardewâs side currently sit eighth in the Barclays Premier League on 23 points, with Sunderland in 15th place with 16 points. The match will also see a familiar face line up against the Black Cats with Jack Colback, who swapped Wearside for Tyneside in the summer, likely to feature. Possible Lineups please log in to view this image Key Battles Cattermole v Colback Jack Colback will be nervous coming into this weekends game, luckily for him it is at home and the crowd will be on his side but he will have a lot to prove and there will a lot of pressure. He scored the third goal for Sunderland the last time the teams met as every fan knows and Newcastle fans will be hoping he provides the favour for them. He has begun to settle into his role at the rival club after a shaky start to the season but Lee Cattermole will make sure he stifles Colbackâs game. Cattermole has played four derby games and knows the occassion well, on his good days he can hold the centre of the pitch brilliantly and can play long passes that could open up Newcastle to Fletcher and Gomez. However, It is a well known fact that he can lose his head and was dissmissed after the game at Newcastle in March, 2012 when Ameobi snatched a 90th minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw. He will be aware of this going into Sundayâs game and hopefully he will manage to have a controlled game keeping Colback at bay. OâShea v Cisse John OâShea has already said that there will be no pleasantries on Sunday and hasnât lost against Newcastle in the four games he has played for the Black Cats. He is an experienced player in derby games from his time at Manchester United and knows what these types of games mean to the fans. He has had a steady season so far and has worked well with Wes Brown to create a defensive line that has become relatively solid. He will have his hands full this weekend though with the return of Papisse Cisse, Newcastleâs top scorer this season. Cisseâs double at Chelsea werenât difficult goals to score but he still has the capability of making things difficult for defenders. He has played a part in a couple of derby games but hasnât been in a team that have beaten Sunderland yet and after having Wednesdayâs game off against Tottenham he will be fully rested and prepared for Sunday. If OâShea can man-mark Cisse close enough and command the back line like he has been doing in many games this season it might not allow Cisse enough room to move and keep him quiet and out of the game. Fletcher v Coloccini Fletcher scored in the 2-1 home victory last season but missed the two 3-0 wins through injury. He will be very eager to play his part in the game and make himself known to the Newcastle defence. A goal from Fletcher in this game will boost his confidence for the rest of the season undoubtedly and he knows that. Playing alongside Connor Whickam and Jordi Gomez could be a real threat to Newcastle but Coloccini will be aware of this threat. He has been a consistent player for Newcastle this season and will be wanting to show his faithfulness to the side this weekend. He hasnât played in a derby game since the 1-1 draw in 2012 so he will be prepared to feed off the home crowd atmosphere. Fletcher will be hoping that Newcastleâs back line will be mentally and physically tired from their last two losses where they have let in four goals each at Tottenham and Arsenal. This could be a deciding factor for the Sunderland striker. Stats & Facts Head to Head Sunderland are unbeaten in five league meetings with Newcastle. Think 9 spots are nailed on and Gus has a but a couple of decisions to make . Gomez or Rodwell and Jozy or Fletch. We have to target their keeper so Gomez plays for me as he's probably our best shooter outside the box. Get Larsson Johnson and Vergini playing in a triangle down the right and pepper them with crosses into Wickham and Fletcher. F****ing come on!!! ------------------Pantilimon------------------ Vergini-----Oshea-------Brown-----Réveillère -----------------Cattermole------------------- Johnson-----Larsson-----Gomez----Wickham ------------------Fletcher---------------------
That leaves Jozy, Giacch, Alverez, Bridcott, Alveraz, Buckley, Rodwell, Coates, Vito………we have options to change things later. Keep 11 on the pitch and we will make it 3 on the bounce thru there.
AJ loves this game so despite his patchy form I reckon he is a real key man here. I think it's a great game for Rodwell, he needs to do something and his tight first touch will draw fouls from the god awful Tiote, I'd play him deep, close to Catts with licence to break forward. Janmaat is the only defender of note so I'd put Buckley against him, effectively sacrifice a weak link to occupy a strong one and get AJ cutting inside, hopefully Taylor is on his side as he is dog ****. If Fletch gets around the penalty spot with their slow to react CB's, he will get at least one clear chance. I hope Giacc can get in somewhere, I hope Jozy is not in the matchday party, if he misses one in this then he truly will be a dead weight. 2 very even teams and I have to say the old faithful seems likely, 1-1.
I trust gus he knows how to win these games and pardew on the other hand!!! Not worried about them at all..
This game has been made spicier by their last two defeats that were a result of defensive weaknesses. But it is a derby with a cup tie atmosphere and anything can happen, I do expect our quality and experience to get us a win. I am relaxed about it though after watching a recording of our last visit there.
Was at the game and the scenes at the end were not hooligans but kids who had been passed overhead because the stadium was jam packed.
I remember that like yesterday WMS, glad no ****er was videoing me the sound that came out of me was not remotely masculine. What a ****ing strike that was.
Great thread, as usual ......... posting endless repetitive ****e may be good enough for the Mags board but this board is class. I think this will be a tight messy game and, for me, Sunderland's full backs are the key to winning this game. Vergini has little to worry about, from Gouffran & Dummet, so should be able to get AJ in down the right and trouble their dreadful keeper. Janmaat needs watching but Cisse looks like their only real goal threat from long hoofs into the box. The Newcastle midfield have a red card lurking because they'll be overcompensating and desperate not to be humiliated again. Whether Williamson or Taylor play, both quite poor, we should see Fletcher & Wickham create a good few chances. 2-1 to Sunderland, Haway Lads.
