There should never have been a free kick in the first place. Bruce's "challenge" was a blatant foul and completely unnecessary. There isn't a referee on planet Earth that wouldn't have given it.

I agree that MacGregor should have saved it. But he shouldn't have had to.

I think McShane is a better player, and those stats are pretty damning, but regardless it isn't good that seemingly two different defenders have fallen out with Bruce over Alex being picked ahead of them.

When he signed we all knew it'd be a difficult situation. Bruce must have known and it became his responsibility after making the decision to sign his son, to ensure it didn't cause problems in the dressing room. He's failed to do that with Faye, and it looks like the same has happened with McShane too. Some players like Ben Arfa are just difficult and a manager maybe can't win, but two centre backs falling out with the manager for the same reason makes it pretty clear that something is wrong. Whatever you think about the players this situation doesn't reflect well on Bruce.

urban myth - the whole team played well - why do some people just quote one performance - all anybody says in relation to 'Bruce is ****' is that he played well against Liverpool once - yawn

I don't see how anybody can moan about Alex Bruce, he's stepped up 10 times better than anyone expected. He's been a good replacement for us when a centre half has been injured/suspended.

Completely agree. Some people will only ever moan becuase they don't like the fact he is the manager's son.

Furthermore, they cannot stand that he is a better player than the cult hero that is Paul McShane.

Yeah I don't really get the idea that Bruce along thwarted Suarez that day. Seems to be a popular version of events though.

I liked his crunching double tackle against Man U last year mind. Cleverley and Welbeck was it?

I think McShane is completely unpredictable and wouldn't have him in the squad. Bruce, however, does not have the ability with a ball at his feet to look comfortable in league 1 never mind the Premier League. He is utterly shocking at playing the ball out of defence and we can't afford to hoof the ball away every time we get it. I also agree with other posters that the reason he makes so many "impressive" tackles is because he reads the game very poorly. In one on one situations how many times does Chezzy have to dive in? Rio Ferdinand used to preach about staying on your feet and he was completely right. Great defenders read the game and can tackle a man standing up most of the time.

I agree, I don't think Bruce is a brilliant centre half. He's a decent championship defender who can raise his game for the Premier League at times as shown last season, however when playing week in week out he will begin to get caught out. However, I believe he's a better and more reliable defender than McShane.

Neither of them make big mistakes these days, but the big difference for me is what they do after winning the ball. McShane can play it out whereas Bruce just hoofs it anywhere and it invariably comes back. We struggle to get out of our own half sometimes and people like Bruce don't help with that.

True. But i also think we have room for both especially with Maguire more than likely going out on loan in Jan.
Bruce jnr put in a great tackle @ Chelsea last week and got booked by the hapless and clueless Chris Foy. No shock then that he has been stood down until Boxing Day when he gets the Birmingham v Derby game.

Is that so ? One has passion - One has none and the last one was under orders from the wife to moveback home.
Fryatt is hardly pulling up any trees with Forest at the moment either.

Quinn was never an issue anyway. SB is wise enough to keep all base players.

I quoted that particular game as the most feared striker in the premiership at that time was kept quiet for the majority of the 90 mins. There is also popular belief amongst quite a lot of supporters that if Bruce had of stayed on the pitch in the cup final we would of stood a better chance of beating Arsenal, so that's two performances by my maths.

If Alex was not called Bruce then he would not get anywhere near the crass comments he does do. Yes he makes mistakes but what players dont.

I think Steve Bruce is well qualified to pick his best centre backs.

he is - problem is he doesn't - an accusation that thrown at him at Birmingham as well - so much so that Junior had to leave for Ipswich because it was embarrassing - it's just as embarrassing here as well

You really need to get over this obsession. Alex played 6, according to wiki, yes 6 games for his dad at Birmingham. The rest of the time he was out on loan. Pretty sad your irrational hatred of him.
