Should tobacco be made illegal ?

It causes more death and disease than other prohibited substances, so , why not ?

    Ban this, ban that.

If they ban smoking then what next? Alcohol?

no , alcohol is the sacred sacrament of our fine nation.

I was just pondering....cocaine, cannabis, even heroin cause less harm to the human body than tobacco..so ,why not ?

If you went into a time capsule and came back 200 years later, do you think people will still be smoking tobacco? I suspect not.

I also strongly suspect the substance will be banned - all highly speculative of course <ok>

I've always been somewhat sceptical of these claims. Anyone who abuses a substance is going to do damage to their body whether it be alcohol, heroin or cocaine. However, most drinkers are sensible and responsible. Most people who take hard drugs are addicts.

in some senses yes , cannabis use , particularly in the young can affect brain function in the longer term , unadulterated forms of other drugs dont seem to cause any long term damage - from what Ive read anyway - unless people become dependant on them...but broadly speaking , the same could be said of cigarettes.

I would disagree though that "most people who take hard drugs are addicts".

I guess my point is why do cigarettes enjoy this " exemption " ?

You reckon there are more recreational users of coke and heroin than there are addicts?

I don't think you can compare tobacco to cocaine or heroin. You don't get people robbing grannies just so they can afford 20 Marlboro.

It'll come down to economics at the end of the day. Does anyone have any figures for how much the government earns from tobacco in tax against how much it costs the country in health care, sick days etc?

It's pretty much recognised now that cigarettes are a drain on the economy.

I don't need an excuse to twat an old lady. Annoying bastards. Seriously though, banning tobacco wouldn't affect me. And I can't see them prohibiting nicotine on its own.

Smoking is for gays and cool ****s.

I recently gave up, (6 weeks) and what a difference in my energy levels, lung capacity and general well being.

    I'd recommend it to anyone.

Why don't we ban cars that go faster than 70 m.p.h while we're at it?
