2006 was a warm, sunny period for Canadian football fans. We were preparing to host our own U-20 world cup the next year, and our team was toppling giants like Brazil with style. Our young players were playing across Europe and gaining some renown at clubs like Newcastle, with David Edgar (Whom I trained with when I was younger in Ontario :3 )

What the hell happened? Jamie Peter's is still lounging in championship football, David Edgar hasn't really played for a first team in more than a year, and apart from Junior Hoilett I can't think of any decent Canadian footballer left in the premier league

    Is that Edgar at 0:53?

    Left-footed CB finishing like that?!

That was indeed Edgar. We missed a trick having him as a defender.

Not happy with the way he left though, he obviously didn't want to play for us.

Look at the positions he can allegedly play (Wikipedia): CB, LB, RB, CDM. Cannot believe we have Perch to play those positions instead of him. Despite him being 20/21 he never looked out of place when he played for us. I dunno how his career could fail so spectacularly considering he was quite quick, and is massive. It's a conundrum...

I've got a reputation 'round here, sweet!

Another premier league player worth noting is Simeon Jackson of Norwich who put in some good performances to help them get promoted.

Best Canadian out there other than Junior Hoilett is Simeon Jackson at Norwich. The problems with Canadian football have less to do with the talent available and more to do with how poorly the Canadian Soccer Association.

    edit. ^^^^Beat me to Simeon.

I always assumed he left because we couldnt offer him first team football, but looking back at his Wiki page, he played more for us in his last season at NUFC than he has since at Burnley & Swansea. Very strange.

I heard all sorts of things about his move. Apparently we offered him a contract but he wanted to join Burnley, presumably to stay in the Premier League. Ended up getting shifted to Swansea and missing out on promotion while Burnley got relegated and we got promoted! He would've been better off with us.

Definitely. He could well have played the role Williamson has, if he'd done a decent enough job

Would've played the year we came up as well at times!

PS. I'm sure he's right footed.

Hindsights a wonderful thing.. but I have to doubt anyone who considered a move to Burnley better for Premier League football than sticking with us. They were always going to be favourites to go down and we were always going to be favourites to go up.

True story, the CSA have no skills in man management, and haven't a clue who the best Canadian players are out there, or how to get the best out of them when put together in the squad. Personalities like DeRo haven't helped matters either.

In respect to Edgar, I've said before how disappointed I am at how his career has stalled when I think everyone in both Canada (and maybe?) Newcastle hoped he'd become the next big thing. I don't know who to blame really? But somebody gave him bad advice as to where his career should go
