  5. I said months ago that Ashley saying "the money will be invested in the club", was bullshit, and it's also a misleading statement as most people would have thought that the 35m would be going on transfers, but it really meant he'd use that money to pay wages and expenses, instead of paying from the money he already has like he should.

I never expected him to give the full 35m. However, it is early days.

I'll be disappointed if we sign Erdinc and Naylor and then no one else, but i'd be content if we signed two good strikers and keep the players were already have at the club, and also get rid of Smith, Xisco, Perch. Routledge i suppose could be decent emergency cover. He's only on low wages i imagine.

It's not about the quantity of money spent, i know, but i agree that it makes me a bit nervous that we seem to be always taking a gamble with the cheapest options. The cheapest, controllable manager, free signings, selling players if we need money to buy them.

We were dreaming if we ever thought we'd spend 35 million this summer. However, keeping some key players now i suppose is worth more than worrying about replacements.

The point I was making was why not wait until the end of July and then see what the shape of things to come is, the bandwagon of nervousness, anger, upset, sadness, afraid, scared, utter hopelessness and the sinking of the Titanic comes a tad too soon for me.

  8. It would be stupid to just chuck money at players like we used to, i agree, but Mike Ashley and the club seem to want to take the cheapest option they can and expect results. It's not a sensible option in my opinion.

Mike Ashley wants to make this club attractive to buyers so he can sell it for a decent sum, and to do that he needs to i agree get the club stable and not chuck money around, but we need to be pushing in the top half and perhaps Europe in the next few years, and to do that we can't just hope for miracles like Tiote to occur all the time for next to no money.

We also need to get rid of this attitude of "the offer was impossible to turn down". Tiote should not be sold at any price, i don't care if it's 25 or 40 million. We need the players, and it's a gamble to sell all your best players and hope for the best with your replacements, and with Ashley, it's likely that only a small portion of the transfer money gained from the sale will be invested in new players anyway.

  9. I know, my comment didn't show signs of panic to me. I said in the comment that it's early days, but it just makes me a bit anxious that we're still going for miracle cheap signings and expecting results. It could be a massive success but it could also backfire in our faces dramatically.

We havent spent much but we have brought in awesome players, we will spend on another striker and maybe another couple players depending on anyone leaving.

We dont HAVE to spend the money jeesh

Tash nervous, anxious, why? it's early on, chill out man and stop following the herd of despair, be glass half full, be cadbury chocolate, be an ice cube sitting there in its tray waiting for the blissful day that a shower of vodka embraces your coolness.

I agree now that we shouldn't be selling our best players. We are in a situation where we don't need the money, and certain players couldn't be replaced with ones of equal quality anyway. I couldn't think of a big money signing we could make and i would be truly happy with. Even N'Zogbia is in the same category as the likes of Jonas for me. Find us a goalscorer and a bit of depth at the back and up top and we could push for Europe, most of our squad is good enough already.

Are you saying N'Zogbia isn't as good as Jonas, or just money-wise?

I think we've finally got it right, i don't understand why people think oh we got £35m now let's spend it all? We're looking to the future not just the end of the season, it's not going to be instant success but if we can improve the team season by season we should be looking pretty good, focus on finishing in the top 10 this season then look on.

No I mean, as much as he is a better player, he isn't better to the point where i'd pay £10m for him and then 50k a week for him. He is in that same level as players. But as it is a position we don't need to strenghten for now we shouldn't be spending large chunks of our budget to do so, especially when it's only a small improvement.

My main point on this is that it is too early to be worrying too much about this. We have 2 months or the window to go and there are still noises coming from the club that we are looking for another striker, AM and LB.

I am also very much in the we don't and shouldn't spend the money for the sake of it camp. We have been lucky in picking up some quality bargains (we hope) and are still in the market for some players that we are obviously going to have to pay money for. Before the window opened the general consensus from many on here seemed to be "we don't realistically expect all £35m to be spent on transfer fees we'll be happy with about £20m" accepting that much of the rest would go on wages, agents fees etc. I don't see that we are not on track for an expenditure in that area. So why are we now worried?

Finally on a personal note I actually think that we should not be looking to spend it all anyway, but should keep some back for January and/or for the future.

The FIFA Fairplay rules are going to be effecting the finances of the club in ways that we can only begin to understand (as we do not have the info on the clubs finances) so we should accept that some financial prudence may also be necessary at this time. If we have succeeded in advancing the squad and doing so without breaking the bank I will look on this as a successful window.

Why spend for the sake of spending.

Are you happy with the quality of players we have signed?

3 players that could easily have cost £15m-£20m under other circumstances.

I'd be happy if we didn't spend another penny but the relative quality came in. Taylor for £1m. A striker and a winger (plus jose replacement) would be fine by me.

We can try and go big guns for huge signings but 1. are they likely to come here ahead of Champs League teams a la Gervinho and 2. We'll have to throw huge wages at them disrupting our wage structure and possibly other players.

Plenty time left as long as we cover and get necessary bodies of relevant quality I'm happy

The thing that concerns me most is that we're focusing on an area where we don't really need new players (midfield) and are failing to strengthen our defence. Obviously a striker is our top priority, but surely we should prioritise defenders over midfielders now?

Our own personal take on that is that there should be plenty of season ticket money, TV revenue, sponsorship income etc. to meet those running costs and we refer back to Pardew's words on the day after Carroll's departure, which seemed crystal clear to us:

"The one thing I said to Mike yesterday was: 'Look, if this boy is going to go, this money has to be reinvested in the team, all of it, and he has assured me of that. For the Newcastle fan, that is the most important message I can give today, that all that money will be used.'"
