Before the window opened, I was confident of some big summer spending, with at least £20-£25mill to re-vamp the squad.

So far we've spent £5.5mill and bought two free players, with £3mill (I think) being brought in for Nolan. Net spend, about £2.5mill.

Now it's obviously early days, but I'm starting to get worried now as the club are making fewer and fewer noises about spending some serious cash on quality players. In fact, if the media is anything to go by, we seem to be focusing all our attention on Erding (£7.5mill) and Taylor (£1mill). Even Pards seems to have admitted that we're just in the market now for another striker and an attacking midfielder.

What makes me more concerned is that many people seem to be accepting of it. I've heard a few saying they just want another striker and they'll be happy with how this transfer window has went.

Now this is making me a little anxious. The possibility of spending some cash and filling out the squad with quality players seems to be diminishing somewhat. Bringing in two quality free players and a cheap quality player in Cabaye is good business, but it doesn't hide the fact that we've been expecting to spend a lot of money, and we were told we would countless times.

So, is it still yet to happen, or have we been told yet more bullshit by Ashley and his puppet?

Really? I thought about £15m would be spent, which could be about right if Erding signs and we get one more.

I'm delighted with the three we have signed so early in the market, it gives them a chance to bond with the team. Good business AP, let it continue...

Also, did you hear AP earlier? He said that 'free signings' don't mean that, there are huge fee's involved.

Pardew was saying today dont try and do the maths, you wont even be close. Sadly a lot of money goes to agents and signing on fees, particlularly in free agents like Ba and Marveaux. We've also had the training ground done up.

Imagine if we spent 7mil each on Ba, Marveaux, Cabaye, Erdinc and another LB. We'd have done the same business but the weird thing is some people would be happier I think. It seems as though we've been quite lucky, we targeted Ba and found we didnt need to pay a transfer fee, then probably were going to splash out on a winger of Marveaux's quality, but then found him for far less.

Erdinc, Taylor and an Enrique replacement (which should probably total near 20m) and I'll be happy.

I didn't think we'd ever spend anywhere near what we received for Carroll, but I'm happy so far. I'll be less happy if we've not got anyone else by the end of the window, especially if we lose a few key players.

Agree with both of you, yes we have signed decent players so far, but I was expecting some higher fee'd and profile signings - things would change for me if we sign Nzogbia, Erding and Taylor (+ maybe one more suprise - please AP) and bring in a couple of Loanees ? wouldn't mind One of Utd's CB's in case someone is played out of position at LB ?? - Smalling or Jones anyone ??

I'd be happier because Ashley would have stuck to his word and spent on quality players. Signing free players shouldn't be in place of signing players which have a transfer fee. We should be fortunate enough to get those 'free' players, and then still build on those with paid players to make our squad even stronger. I don't think they should be an alternative.

We should be using Enrique's fee to buy a replacement for him though, so again, it shouldn't be eating into any of our original transfer budget.

I suppose that it depends on whether we will sign N'Zogbia or a similar winger. If we do for around the £9mill mark it won't be so bad. Even then though, I would have liked to have seen maybe another quality defender, as we're very thin in that department.

I think you're actually being generous with our total spending so far, as well. I think we'll sign a striker, Naylor and a winger, with a total spend of under £10 million. Personally I think it's ridiculous, but others seem to be content with - or in favour of - us not spending much and hoping we still miraculously finish in 7th. Spend money to make money... Speculate to accumulate etc. There has to be a balance, and at the moment, there isn't

No one knows what's going on behind closed doors at the club. We seem to do a lot of our transfer business off the radar. No one knew anything about our signings that we brought in so far with the exception of ba which alot of people could of guest at. Also tiote last season, was completely out the blue.
But, if the stories over gameiro and gervinho were true then there is 10 mil + a pop for them 2 that the club were prepared to spend and since we have missed out on those supposed primary targets then I am happy for the club to take some time over other suitors. Time will tell, still early days yet.

The stupid thing about that is it can be done regardless of financial fair play. This is the last window we may be able to secure a player we need before fair play comes in, whereas that can be done after. I know there is the possibility of liquidation etc, but we're on a sound enough footing now not to worry about that

You certainly aren't the only person to be worried about this Chappaz, I know its early doors at the moment but with Ashley's track record its never too early to be pessimistic.

Our in-comings so far have been fairly impressive, but one does wonder if the free players carried any sort of fee would we have been interested? Are we just shopping around for bargains instead of whacking in a few bids for players who can really take the club to next level?

For some reason I can see the rest of window panning out in a disappointing manner, in my opinion I can see us selling Enrique to Arsenal/Liverpool for around 8 million, bringing in Naylor for a fraction of the price, be promised a proper replacement (which wont come) cue some sort of excuse from Pardew "we think Taylor has what it takes" maybe? And on top of that maybe another striker and a couple of youngsters of freebies.

At the end of the day Ashley wont change, he wont suddenly spend 35 million on new players, the board constantly bang on about how important it is for the club to be on better financial footing, so most of the money will be going right into Ashley's pocket, I could definitely see us starting the season with a negative net spend.

    Prove me wrong Mike!

It's quite disappointing really. I never expected the whole £35m to be spent but it seems like it is all going towards wages, signing on fees and the training ground with it seeming unlikely that we are going to spend much in the way of transfer fees. I would even expect the net spend to reach £10m which is a little disappointing considering we managed to bring so much in for Carroll.

I prefer this sensible approach! I don't want us to chuck 15-20m bids in for a player. A huge risk with huge pressure. Who could we get as well at that price? How often do you honestly see mid table teams make big money signings that you look at and say that it is worth it?

Why not wait until the transfer window ends, I can't understand why the usual fuss bangs around until we see the end of the transfer window, sometimes the problem is buying too soon or the wrong players, god knows we have had enough of that, it's got to be about squad and team not star players again that don't produce.

    Pan Haggerty - serves 4
600g Desiree potatoes, peeled & thinly sliced
    100g strong cheddar, grated
3 onions, peeled & thinly sliced
    20g butter, melted
    1½ tbsp olive oil
    Seasoning
Preheat the oven to 190°C/Gas 5. Sweat the onions in an ovenproof frying pan with the oil for
approximately 6 minutes or until soft. Reserve.
Place a layer of potatoes along the base of the pan, brush with melted butter and season. Next,
layer some cheese and onions on top. Repeat the layering with the final layer being cheese.
Cook on the stove over a medium heat for a few minutes until the bottom layer of potatoes is
golden brown. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes until the potatoes are tender. The cheese topping
    should be golden brown.
Slide onto a warm plate, slice and serve.
