35 members of the Carsi, Beskitas' ultra fans group, are on trial for 'attempting a coup' to overthrow the increasingly fundamentalist, paranoiac and totalitarian government in Turkey. Of course all they did, along with fans from Fenerbahce, was to take part in the anti Government Taksim protests. Including 'comandeering' a massive digger to take out police water cannon. Successfully, the police ran away.

They face life imprisonment if convicted. Carsi is traditionally a left wing/anarchist leaning group, but as one of them said "if we had the strength to carry out a coup we would have got Beskitas the Championship". They like to sing "Cheers, Tayyip" at matches because of Tayyip Erdogan 's(the increasingly unhinged president) anti alcohol prejudices.

Other things Erdogan does not like are freedom of speech and the press; 'blasphemy' (numerous imprisonments for this medieval crime); secular education; public displays of affection (passed a law against it, hundreds of couples gathered near an Istanbul subway station to protest against it by kissing and were beaten up by the police). On booze, his government passed a law banning its sale in shops between 10 at night and 6 in the morning and consumption within 100 metres of a mosque - two weeks to pass the legislation, no consultation. He also wants to turn Sancta Sophia, one of the most signficant churches (now a museum) in the world into a mosque. A huge number of Istanbul residents oppose all of these things, and protested on the streets in 2013. Erdogan is also quite keen on continuing the oppression of the Kurds, who are up to 25% of Turkey's population. He is one of those politicians who thinks the mere act of being elected gives him permission to do whatever he wants. Bizarrely, the biggest hope is the armed forces, which remain resolutely behind the secular constitution.

Turkey is extremely worrying, another potential flashpoint in a world full of them. Istanbul is a great place, but it's western leaning secular population look increasingly at odds with the rest of the Turkish population of the country.

More on the Carsi here. Not very well written, but you'll get the drift.

Thank you for that contribution. It's pronounced something like "charser" in Turkish.

Football, politics and religion. It's my dream thread, plus I have a lot of respect for these democratic Turks who are not putting up with ****.

I was in Istanbul a couple of months ago, out in Taksim, when it kicked off again there. Police were there ''dispersing'' protesters with tear gas. Most of the people I met in Turkey were against the regime and fairly liberal in their outlook. However from what they were saying, Erdogan still has huge support in the country, especially anywhere east of Istanbul.

f** it, I thought this could be a feisty thread, but seems like I'm the only one interested. Oh well.........I shall continue my rather passive and pointless support for the Carsi 35 nevertheless.

Happens us all Stan. Just don't do what I did and flog a dead horse to.....umm....death like I did with a totally obscure and Mickey Mouse football game played between Oz and Ireland once a year. You end up looking/sounding like you have a mental illness.

Turkey for the EU? That's a bit controversial. Where's Imaz when you need him, eh?

We're having our own turkey issues here!

Turkey bacteria deemed cause of fatal Nackawic Christmas supper
Lab tests confirmed presence of Clostridium perfringens and Bacillus cereus, say health officials

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-b...-of-fatal-nackawic-christmas-supper-1.2875361

"Like most community dinners, the food sometimes is cooked at peoples houses and brought in for the supper. Some people CANNOT cook period. Their intentions are good. It's just the way it is. The turkey may have been cooked properly, but stored improperly or cooled improperly. Anyone could have mistakenly made all these people sick and sadly killed one. I'm sure this person or organization did not mean to do any harm to anybody and will be extra careful the next time."

You're right mate, it's easy to appear an unhinged obsessive on here. Is it me or has the board got a bit dull recently? I only really like the OT threads anyway, and good ones of those are now few and far between.

Come on Imaz, liven it up a bit.

Thanks Kilburn for letting us know where you stand on the issue.

It definitely has. Controversial characters like Imaz are the life's blood of any Forum and when they leave, as you say, the place becomes a bit dull.

Looks like NY is the latest to throw a strop and stomp off into the night. He's just the latest in a long line of stompers :(

In his recent Q&A session, Les Ferdinand mentioned how his spell there gave him the confidence to score goals.

    I rather delierately avoided that.

I asked what you thought mate. You're like a human search engine, cutting, pasting and linking vast swathes of the internet on the most tenuous connections. Each to his own I suppose.

I think that the problem you will find Stan? is not in the issue itself. But posters will only react to what involves them on a personal level. It all boils down to human nature. I face the same problems myself on a daily basis. People never think it will happen to them. It's a really sad mindset but it unfortunately does happen all to often.

Posters on here only react to QPR related posts in the main. Anything outside of this is alien and although they may have an opinion it may not be considered high-brow enough to carry any weight. I firmly believe that most of our posters would like to comment on OT threads but don't because they feel that they are not well informed enough and can't argue against the antagonism that maybe aimed at them.

We do have a few clever posters on here who posses the ability to deconstuct a decent members innocent post and use it to score points. I feel that this is what deters our posters from posting on OT threads. It has become an almost precise art. There is no room for a passive thought to be addressed without conviction.

No problem, I'm afraid that I rather drifted into this thread, but I have now learnt something about this group of supporters.
